Model code of conduct, in place for Lok Sabh elections, has been relaxed in four Andhra Pradesh districts -- East Godavari, Visakapatnam, Vizianagram and Srikakulam -- in view of relief work required due to destruction caused by Cyclone Fani.

"The Election Commission of India approves the proposal for granting relaxations in the provisions of Model Code of Conduct in East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagram and Srikakulam districts, for all the preventive and relief work associated with Cyclonic Storm Fani," the EC said.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu wrote a letter to the Election Commission requesting relaxation of the model code of conduct in four districts in the wake of the cyclone Fani.

Citing the forecast made by the meteorological department and completion of elections in the state, Naidu said, "The cyclone is going to be a super cyclone with wind speed expected to be around 200 km per hour. In view of this, four districts of Andhra Pradesh- East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam are to be kept on high alert."
