Congress national spokesperson Tom Vadakkan jumping ship to join the BJP is a major setback for the party, especially since he is perceived to be a close confidante of of Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi and has been a Gandhi family loyalist for close to 30 years.

But Vadakkan's decision to abandon mother ship has been some time in making.

Sources tell us he has been in touch with BJP leaders since February and finally made up his mind to quit the Congress yesterday. Nobody in the Congress got wind of his move till it was announced by union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today.

BJP chief Amit Shah made sure the news was broken to the Congress soon after the Congress Working Committee meeting ended in Ahmedabad for maximum impact.

Vadakkan is likely to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Trissur in Kerala.

The BJP is telling anyone willing to listen, 'ab picture toh baki hai' in other words, more sitting MPs of the Congress from West Bengal will be joining the BJP.
