Naidu meets Javadekar on Polavaram, project gets 2-year extension

Vice President of India and chairman, Rajya Sabha, M Venkaiah Naidu today called the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar, to his chamber in the Upper House and suggested to him that the ministry should consider keeping in abeyance the 'stop work order' on Polavaram multipurpose project for another two years in the interest of the nation in general and Andhra Pradesh in particular, as it is a national project and also the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh.  

The last 'stop work order' had been kept in abeyance for one year from July 3, 2018, to July 2, 2019.  Prior to that the 'stop work order' had been kept in abeyance thrice, in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18. 

The vice president also impressed upon the minister the need to allow the work to continue on the project without any hindrance.  

The minister responded positively and assured the VP that the matter would be given due consideration, it is learnt.  

Later in the day, Javadekar tweeted: 'Government gives two year extension to construction work related to Polavaram multipurpose project in Andhra Pradesh.'
