Significant loss of Himalayan glaciers over 40 years, says study

'Glaciers across the Himalayas experienced significant ice loss over the past 40 years, with the average rate of ice loss twice as rapid in the 21st century compared to the end of the 20th century,' write J M Maurer, J M Schaefer, S Rupper and A Corley in Science Advances.

'Because of the complex monsoon climate in the Himalayas, dominant causes of recent glacier changes remain controversial, although atmospheric warming, the albedo effect due to deposition of anthropogenic black carbon (BC) on snow and ice, and precipitation changes have been suggested as important drivers,' they write, here.
