Communist Party of India general secretary Sudhakar Reddy has tendered his resignation, taking moral responsibility of the rout of the party in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The CPI's Party Congress has been called in New Delhi in third week of August.

Insiders in the CPI say that D Raja and Atul Kumar Anjan are in the race to succeed Sudhakar Reddy.

The CPI won two Lok Sabha seats in the last elections in Tamil Nadu, thanks to their alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Hence, Raja's chances to succeed Reddy are better.

After the loss, the CPI is on the verge of losing its national party status.
