Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, said on Sunday that she was not elected a parliamentarian to "clean toilets and drains" in the state.

Sadhvi Pragya's statement has come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been encouraging the country to participate in the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'.

A video of the BJP MP making this comment was posted by news agency ANI. In the video, Sadhvi Pragya is seen addressing some people in Sehore when she made the comment. She also said that she would honestly perform the responsibilities that she has become a parliamentarian for.

"Hum naali saaf karwane ke liye nahi bane hain. Hum aapka shauchalaya saaf karne ke liye bilkul nahi banaye gaye hain. Hum jis kaam ke liye banaye gaye hain, vo kaam hum imaandaari se karenge," Sadhvi Pragya is quoted as saying by ANI.

Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast, became the Bhopal MP after she defeated Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh.
