Congress leader Rashid Alvi has drawn flak for targeting PM Narendra Modi's mother in the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls to be held a few months from now.

Alvi said the PM Modi has set a bad precedent for the youth in the country by not caring about his mother. He said Modi himself stays in palaces, wears suits and keeps pens worth lakhs of rupees but chooses to keep his mother in a '10X10 room'. "What kind of a message is he trying to send to the youth of the nation?" Alvi asked.

"Does Modi expect them to treat their mothers in the same manner?" the Congress leader asked.

Alvi also said there will be no democracy if Modi returns to power in 2019. He said people wont be able to speak freely and leaders like him wont be able to make speeches anymore. Alvi then attacked BJP leaders for using venomous language while speaking in public.

The PM's mother, Heeraben, lives in her ancestral house in Vadnagar, a small town in north Gujarats Mehsana district, with another son.

Alvis comments shortly after yet another controversial statement by likening Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Yogi Adityanath to a poisonous snake.  He made the comments while speaking to party workers in Amroha.
