A 10 per cent quota in jobs and education for people from general category who also belong to the economically weaker sections became possible today after a bill for this was passed by the Rajya Sabha.

With 155 noes, the Rajya Sabha rejects proposal to send bill for scrutiny of a select committee. The motion was moved by DMK MP Kanimozhi.

The bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha last evening, will now need the signature of the President.

Most parties have questioned the timing of the bill, alleging that the government's move was meant to reap benefits in the coming national elections. Pointing out that polls are held in the country every few months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a push for simultaneous elections.
