A video showing a senior police officer from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh making extremely communal statements in a Muslim locality last Friday, when police personnel were dealing with violent protests that had broken out in the city after Friday prayers on over the new citizenship law, has gone viral on social media.
In a mobile phone video, Akhilesh Narayan Singh, who serves as Superintendent of Police (City) of Meerut, can be seen walking in a narrow lane wearing riot gear.
Some other policemen, also in riot gear, are seen walking with him.
Reacting to the video, Prashant Kumar, additional director general of Meerut, said, "Stones were being
pelted, anti-India and pro-neigbouring country slogans were being raised
there. Situation was very very tense.
"PFI (Popular Front of India) pamphlets were being
distributed. This was despite all appeals, including by religious leaders.
"Yes if situation was normal then choice
of words could have been better, but that day the situation was
extremely volatile, our officers showed a lot of restraint, there was no
firing by Police."
The SP also defended his action, saying, "Some boys after seeing us raised Pakistan zindabad slogans and started running. I told them if you raise Pakistan zindabad slogans and hate India so much that you pelt stones then go to Pakistan. We are trying to identify them." -- Agencies, ANI
