Congress has issued a three-line whip to its Rajya Sabha MPs to be present in the House on Wednesday for the introduction of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that will be tabled in the House on Wednesday.

The Citizenship Bill, already passed by the Lok Sabha, will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The Bill sailed through Lok Sabha after a 12-hour-long debate on Monday with 311 votes in favour of it and 80 against.

BJP has already issued whip to all the members of Rajya Sabha to attend the sessions on December 10 and December 11. Now NDA will require the support of at least 121 MPs in the 240-member Rajya Sabha to pass the Citizenship Bill.

Members who defy the party whip are likely to face action.

The numbers as they stand now have 121 MPs favouring the Bill and 100 against it while a bunch of others haven't made their stand clear.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955, to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians, excluding Muslims, from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for Indian citizenship.

The bill relaxes the requirement of residence in India from 11 years to six years for these migrants.
