23:05   Macron slams Brazilian prez for comments on wife
French President Emmanuel Macron has described his Brazilian counterpart Jair Bolsonaro as "extremely disrespectful" after the South American leader appeared to mock his wife, Brigitte Macron, in a Facebook post.

In a post on Bolsonaro's Facebook page, a user posted a meme comparing the appearance of the Brazilian president's wife with that of the French first lady, and implying that Macron was jealous. "Don't humiliate the guy ... haha," read the reply from Bolsonaro's account.

"He had extremely disrespectful comments towards my wife," Macron said, while speaking at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, on Monday.

"What can I tell you? It's sad. It's sad for him and for Brazilians. I think that Brazilian women are probably ashamed to read that their president has done that."

"I think that Brazilians, a great people, are a bit ashamed of this behavior," Macron added. "As I have a lot of friendship and respect for the Brazilian people, I hope that they will quickly have a president who is up to the job."

It comes after Macron angered Bolsonaro last week by calling the wildfires blazing in the Amazon rainforest an "international crisis" that should be on the agenda at the G7 summit.

Bolsonaro said the idea of G7 discussing the issue was "reminiscent of [a] colonial mindset [that was] inappropriate in the 21st century."

22:44   G7 leaders back Hong Kong autonomy, call for calm
G7 leaders meeting in France on Monday backed Hong Kong's autonomy as laid out in a 1984 agreement between Britain and China and called for calm in the protest-hit city.

"The G7 reaffirms the existence and the importance of the 1984 Sino-British agreement on Hong Kong and calls for avoiding violence," according to a joint statement issued in French at the end of a G7 meeting in Biarritz, southwest France.

The city has been wracked by more than two months of protests over an attempt by its Beijing-backed government to pass an extradition bill which opponents saw as a huge dent in Hong Kong's autonomy.

They have since morphed into a call for greater democracy and police accountability, with youths at the forefront of demonstrations that have at times descended into clashes with security forces.

On Monday, police used water cannons to repel what they termed "extremely violent" demonstrators, following another weekend of clashes at pro-democracy rallies.

Twenty-one officers were injured during the clashes, Hong Kong police said, while dozens of protesters were arrested -- including a 12-year-old -- for unlawful assembly, possession of weapons and assaulting police.

Officials worldwide have urged Hong Kong authorities to show restraint to avoid serious violence or death.

22:20   Rahul playing politics over invitation: J-K Guv
Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Monday accused Rahul Gandhi of playing politics over his invitation to visit the Valley, saying he just wanted to refrain him from making "baseless statements".

"I want to make it clear that when I had invited Rahul Gandhi to Jammu and Kashmir, my intention was that he will refrain from making baseless statements about Kashmir by having the first-hand appraisal of the situation," the governor said in a statement here.

He added that the Congress leader had turned it into "non-ending issue".
Accusing Rahul Gandhi of playing politics over the issue, Malik said he arrived here along with a host of opposition leaders and said he would meet all detained leaders and interact with mediapersons.
"When Rahul Gandhi played such kind of politics with my invitation, I withdrew my invitation. And it was now a prerogative of the administration to decide whether Rahul Gandhi should visit Kashmir or not," he said.
Malik said the administration had made it clear beforehand that at a time when they were making efforts to maintain peace in the Valley, no politician should come to "make a breach", rather "help in maintaining peace".
He said Rahul Gandhi should understand that the visit would have created problems for people.
"Rahul Gandhi tried to create obstacles in the peace process. When he was not allowed to do so, Rahul on his return to New Delhi made false statements about the situation in Kashmir," Malik said.
"I want to tell Rahul Gandhi that such statements made by him are being used by Pakistan against India. He should understand that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is fragile and it is the issue of national interest. His statements harm the national interest," he added.
Malik said he wanted to urge Gandhi that he should keep national interest on top, rather than using the sensitive issue for his "cheap politics".

21:22   Unnao case: CBI gets till Sep 9 to finish probe
A court on Monday granted the CBI time till September 9 to complete its investigation and file a status report in the 2017 Unnao gangrape case, one of the four related cases transferred by the Supreme Court from Uttar Pradesh.

District Judge Dharmesh Sharma approved the investigative agency's request seeking more time to further investigate the case in which Shubham Singh, Naresh Tiwari and Brajesh Singh Yadav are the accused. All the three are out on bail.

The woman was allegedly raped by expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and  the three men in two different incidents in 2017 when she was a minor.

A separate rape case has been registered against Sengar in which the trial commenced on Friday.
The CBI had earlier told the court that the matter was at the final stage of investigation and had sought one week's time to complete its probe. The court had granted time till August 26 to the probe agency.
The apex court had transferred four criminal cases -- the 2017 rape case; an alleged fake matter under the Arms Act against the father of the rape survivor; his death in police custody, and the gang rape of the woman.
The court had earlier declined the plea of CBI seeking 30 days to complete the investigation and directed it to file a status report by August 17.
The woman, who was a minor then, was allegedly raped by Sengar on June 4, 2017 and the three persons on June 11, 2017.
The woman is battling for life at AIIMS here after a truck rammed into the car in which she was was travelling along with some family members and her lawyer on July 28. Two of her aunts died in the accident.
Sengar, a four-time legislator who represents Bangermau in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, is lodged in jail since April 2018.

20:49   It's been made into a media show: Karti on father's remand
Karti Chidambaram on Monday termed the extension of CBI remand of his father and former Union Minister P Chidambaram to four days, as 'a media show that will continue'.

Speaking to reporters, Karti said, "As I said, this is just made for media show and the show will continue."

On being asked about claims of CBI having evidence against the former Finance Minister, Karti said, "CBI had said a lot of things about me too. I was in their custody, I have been raided four times and have been summoned over twenty times."

"They have done the same thing to me. They should quickly file a charge sheet and take it through trial," Karti said.

On being asked about the arguments being put by probe agencies in the court, Karti said, "I am looking forward and quite keen to know about the document that says that I have a property in Argentina."

Earlier today, a special court had extended the CBI remand of the former finance minister Chidambaram by 4 days in connection with INX Media case after the agency said it has to "unravel the larger conspiracy".

20:05   Maha co-op bank scam: FIR filed against Ajit Pawar, others
Mumbai Police on Monday registered an FIR against senior NCP leader and former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and other functionaries in the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank scam case on the
directions of the Bombay high court.

Other accused include Peasants and Workers Party leader Jayant Patil and officials from the superseded bank's units in 34 districts in the state, an official said.

"We have registered an offence at MRA Marg police station based on the complaint of Economic Offences Wing," an official said.

On August 22, a bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and S K Shinde of the High Court said there was "credible evidence" against the accused in the case and directed the EOW to file an FIR within five days.

The accused were allegedly complicit in causing losses to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore to MSCB between 2007 and 2011.

An inspection by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development as well as a charge sheet filed by a quasi-judicial inquiry commission under the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act blamed the "decisions, actions and inactions" of Pawar and the other accused for the loss.

The NABARD audit report revealed breach of several banking laws and RBI guidelines by the accused in distribution of loans to sugar factories and spinning mills, and subsequent default on repayment and recovery of such loans.

19:37   Will raise Kashmir issue at UNGA: Imran Khan
With Pakistan failing to get traction for its belligerent stand on Kashmir, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Monday that he will raise the issue at every international forum, including at the UN General Assembly.
In his address to the nation on the Kashmir issue after India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, Khan assured the people of Pakistan that his government will stand by the Kashmiris till India lifts the restrictions in the Valley.
Outlining his government's future strategy on Kashmir, Khan said: "First, I believe, the entire nation should stand with the Kashmiri nation. I have said this that I will act as Kashmir's ambassador".
"I will tell the world about this, I have shared this with heads of state that I have been in contact with. I will raise this issue at the UN as well," he said while referring to his scheduled address to the UN General Assembly next month.
"I read in the newspapers that people are disappointed that Muslim countries are not siding with Kashmir. I want to tell you not to be disappointed; if some countries are not raising this issue because of their economic interests, they will eventually take this issue up. They will have to, with time," he said.
Khan claimed that Prime Minister Modi had made a "historic blunder" by revoking Kashmir's special autonomy.
Tensions between India and Pakistan spiked after India abrogated provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution, evoking strong reactions from Pakistan.

An "underwater wing" of Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed is training people to carry out attacks but the Indian Navy is fully prepared to thwart any such attempt, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh said on Monday.

He said all stakeholders in coastal security are ensuring that there is no intrusion from the sea.

"We have received intelligence (input) that an underwater wing of Jaish-e-Mohammed is training people to carry out attacks from water and that is one change.

"But we are fully prepared and will thwart any such attempt," he added.

Admiral Singh was answering a query on the changing form of terror and the navy's response to them.

Speaking about heightened vigil along the country's coast since the deadly 26/11 sea-borne terror attacks on Mumbai in 2008, he said the Navy was overall in-charge of maritime security.

18:33   How the media gurus reacted to Jaitley's passing
Former finance minister Arun Jaitley's death, understandably, saw an outpouring of condolences online, but none as eloquent as what journalists had to say about his.

"Mentor" seemed to have been the favourite word of many describe him. His journalistic durbars were recalled by some, both in a positive and negative manner.

What everyone agreed on was that he knew the world of journalism better than most suspected, and more importantly, knew the owners.

All of which has prompted the Indian Journalism Review to list out 45 tributes journos paid to the departed soul, ranging from the panagyric to the honest.

18:28   Pak prez gets notice from Twitter on J-K post
Twitter has sent a notice to Pakistan President Arif Alvi over his tweet on the situation in Kashmir, according to a media report.

Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari posted the screen shot of a mail received by President Alvi from Twitter authorities and said the notice was "in bad taste and simply ridiculous."
On Monday, President Alvi tweeted a video showing a protest rally over the Kashmir issue.
On Sunday, Minister for Communication Murad Saeed said he has also received a notice from the micro-blogging site that one of his tweets has violated Indian laws.
Director General Inter Services Public Relations Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor last week said the authorities had taken up with Twitter and Facebook the alleged suspension of Pakistani social media accounts posting in support of Kashmir.

"Pakistan authorities have taken up the case with Twitter and Facebook against suspending Pakistani accounts for posting in support of Kashmir. Indian staff at their regional headquarters is the reason," he said in a tweet.
Tensions between India and Pakistan spiked after India abrogated provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution to withdraw Jammu and Kashmir's special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories, evoking strong reactions from Pakistan.

India has categorically told the international community that the scrapping of Article 370 was an internal matter and also advised Pakistan to accept the reality.

18:19   Just wrapped up great meeting with friend Modi'
United States President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded their meeting in Biarritz, France on the sidelines of the G7 Summit.

Trump immediately after the meet, posted a tweet reading, "Just wrapped up a great meeting with my friend Prime Minister Narendra Modi  of India at the #G7Summit in Biarritz, France!"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday categorically rejected any scope for third party mediation between India and Pakistan on Kashmir, saying the two countries can discuss and resolve all issues bilaterally and "we don't want to trouble any third country."

Modi made these remarks while interacting with the media alongside US President Donald Trump who ahead of his meeting with the prime minister had said that he will discuss the Kashmir issue with him on the sidelines of the G7 summit in the French town of Biarritz.

Trump in recent past has offered mediation between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue.

"All the issues between India and Pakistan are of bilateral in nature, and we don't want to trouble any third country. We can discuss and resolve these issues bilaterally," Modi said.

18:03   Fuel supply ban due to fund issues, not ops performance: Lohani
The ban on jet fuel supply to Air India at six airports by the oil marketing firms was on account of fund crunch and not due to carrier's operational performance, airline chief Ashwani Lohani said.

Lohani in a Facebook post on Sunday also wrote that regardless of the situation the Maharaja must keep afloat.

The oil marketing companies led by Indian Oil Corporation last week stopped supplying fuel to Air India's aircraft at  Kochi, Pune, Patna, Ranchi, Vizag and Mohali airports over payment defaults, amid their combined dues mounting to a whopping around Rs 5,000 crore.

The disinvestment-bound flag carrier has a debt pile Rs 58,351 crore as on March 31 this year, while the cumulative loss is to the tune of Rs 70,000 crore with no fiscal support to the airline coming from the government his year.

"The constraints on fueling imposed on AI by the OMC's at six stations is because of an overall shortage of funds but does not in any way mean reflect on the operational performance and recent efforts of the airline," Lohani said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Biarritz. Trump backs off, says India will discuss Pakistan bilaterally. 16:06   Sanitary napkins to be sold for Re 1 at govt outlets
In a massive push for women hygiene, the government will slash price of sanitary napkins sold from its Jan Aushadhi Kendras to just Re 1 per piece from Rs 2.50 currently.

The biodegradable sanitary napkins 'Suvidha' will be available at the subsidised price at designated centres from August 27, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandaviya told PTI in an interview here. The pads are sold in a pack of four which currently cost Rs 10. These from Tuesday will be priced for Rs 4 only, he said.

"We are launching oxo-biodegradable sanitary napkins at Re 1 from tomorrow. These napkins under the brand name Suvidha will be available at 5,500 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country," Mandaviya said.

With reduction of prices by 60 per cent, he said, Modi-led government has fulfilled the promise made by the BJP in its manifesto for 2019 general elections.

"Currently, the manufacturers are supplying the sanitary napkins at their cost of production. So, we will provide subsidy to bring down the retail price," Mandaviya said, who is also Minister of State (Independent charge) for Shipping. On being asked about the total annual expenditure on the subsidy, the minister said it will depend on the sales volume.

According to the National Family Health Survey 2015-16, about 58 per cent of women aged between 15 to 24 years use locally prepared napkins, sanitary napkins and tampons, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers had earlier said in a statement.--  PTI

15:59   Adhir buried Cong with J-K remarks: Malik
Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Monday slammed leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury saying that he has buried his party in the grave by his remarks in Parliament.

"By saying what he said in Parliament, he buried his party in the grave. Whenever there are elections in the country, he will be quoted. What do I say on his knowledge," the Governor said while talking to ANI.

During a debate in Lok Sabha on a resolution to abrogate special status to Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, he asked as to how Kashmir issue was an "internal matter" if "United Nations is monitoring it since 1948."

The Governor's reply came into a question on remarks made by Adhir that Satya Pal Malik's statements are like those given by the BJP leaders and he should be made the leader of BJP in Jammu and Kashmir.

"I am doing my work with utmost devotion. I don't care about these remarks," Malik said. The Governor vowed to protect the "culture, dignity, identity, jobs and land of Kashmiri people."

Earlier when such things happened, even during the tenure of Ghulam Nabi Azad several people were killed in the first week itself. Our emphasis is that no Kashmiri should lose his life. We are not in a hurry. The lives of Kashmiris are very precious for us," he said.

Accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of making an "unending business" out of his invitation, the Governor said, "When he said that people are dying there (in Kashmir), then I had told him to come here and see for himself. For five days, he did not reply to it. After that, he said -- I will go with people, will meet the prisoners, detainees. Then I said that your visit with conditions is not acceptable to me and I am withdrawing it."

"After this I said, I will leave it to the administration that if you want to come and the administration thinks it is correct, it will allow you, otherwise not," he added.

13:30   Day 22: Normal life remains affected in Kashmir
Normal life remained affected in Kashmir for the 22nd consecutive day on Monday as markets and schools were shut, but the movement of private vehicles in the city improved, officials said.

Restrictions were lifted in most areas of the valley, but the deployment of security forces continued to maintain law and order, they said. The communication blockade in Kashmir was eased to some extent as landline telephone services were restored in most places across the valley in view of the improving situation, the officials added.

However, the services continued to remain snapped in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and Press Enclave. The mobile services and internet, including BSNL's broadband and private leased-line internet, remained suspended since 5 August when the Centre abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution and reorganised the state into two Union territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

13:06   JD(U) can't use its 'arrow' poll symbol to contest elections in Jharkhand, Maha: EC
The Election Commission has barred JD(U) from using its poll symbol 'arrow' to contest elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra owing to its similarity with the 'bow and arrow' symbol used by the JMM and the Shiv Sena in the two states, officials said on Monday.

The EC had earlier given concession to the Janata Dal (United) under a rule to contest polls in the two states using its symbol. But it has now withdrawn the concession after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha moved the poll panel, saying similarity in symbols could confuse voters.

The JD(U), the JMM and the Shiv Sena are state parties of Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra respectively.

"Having considered all aspects of the matter, the Commission has directed that the JD(U) will not be granted concession under paragraph 10 of the symbols order to use their reserved symbol 'arrow' for contesting elections in the states of Jharkhand and Maharashtra henceforth," the EC order issued on August 16 said. In March this year, the EC had ordered that the JMM and the Shiv Sena cannot use their poll symbol in Bihar. -- PTI

09:51   Modi to meet Trump today, likely to discuss J-K
The situation in Jammu and Kashmir and trade are high on the agenda as Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets United States President Donald Trump today on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France.

Earlier this week in Washington, Trump said that he would discuss with Prime Minister Modi the situation in Kashmir and help ease the Indo-Pak tensions when they meet at the G7 Summit in France this weekend.

Tensions between India and Pakistan spiked after India abrogated provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution to withdraw Jammu and Kashmir's special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories, evoking strong reactions from Pakistan.

India has categorically told the international community that the scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was an internal matter and also advised Pakistan to accept the reality.

Though India is not a member of the G7 grouping, Modi has been personally invited by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The ministry of external affairs had said that the invitation was a "reflection of the personal chemistry" between the two leaders and also "recognition of India as a major economic power".
