20:29   Jaitley loved Amritsar and its street food
As Amritsar was his 'nanka' (maternal grandparents' home), the love of former Union minister Arun Jaitley for the city was matchless and he was also very fond of Amritsari street food and culture, recall locals.

Paying rich tributes to the Bharatiya Janata Party leader, locals remembered how he loved to move around in its streets Amritsar and interact with the people.

Local BJP leader Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina ,who was the covering candidate for him during the 2017 bypoll for Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, said Jaitley acted as a bridge for the historic SAD-BJP alliance in Punjab.

"He was a visionary leader and was one of the tallest figures in the country's political history," said Chhina, adding that the nation lost a statesman-politician who was an asset not only for the party, but for the whole nation.

"He used to love Amritsari street food and culture and knew all the eating joints in the walled city areas. His love for the city was matchless as Amritsar was his 'nanka' (maternal parents' home)," the BJP leader said.

Jaitley would always say that Hindu-Sikh unity was paramount in Punjab and was the votary for SAD-BJP political partnership, he said.

Local resident Gunbir Singh said Jaitley used to cherish the food at Kesar Da Dhaba, Kultcha Land and Giani Tea where he would chat with the residents at length in Punjabi.

20:16   Guj village adopted by Jaitley mourns his death
People of a group of villages in Dabhoi taluka of Vadodara district on Saturday mourned the demise of Arun Jaitley by downing shutters of shops and holding condolence meetings.

Jaitley, a three time Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, had adopted Karnali, Pipaliya, Vadia and Baglipura, all part of Karnali group panchayat, in December 2014 under the Centre's Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.

"People of Karnali and Pipaliya, Vadia and Baglipura expressed grief by closing shops and attending condolence meetings. Jaitley had rolled out a plan to modernise Karnali village, situated on the banks of Narmada river," Rajni Pandya, chief priest of a famous Lord Shiva temple  in Vadodara told PTI.

"Jaitley helped develop various facilities in Karnali where lakhs of Lord Shiva devotees visit the Kuber Bhandari temple every year," Pandya said.

Jaitley had spent a day in his adopted village on June 1, 2015, and had also laid the foundation stone of a water tank and modern post office.

Among his plans for the village was construction of a bridge between Karnali and Chandod, located on the other side of the Narmada river, so that devotees could visit religious places without having to take a long road detour.

"We had been holding special prayers in the temple every day from August 10, soon after Jaitley was admitted in AIIMS.

The puja continued till today," he said.   -- PTI

15:14   Workers of Ordnance factories call off their strike
Defence production at 41 facilities across the country is likely to normalise from Monday, with the unions representing civilian employees of Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) on Saturday calling off their ongoing one-month strike over the Centre's corporatisation plans.

A joint statement by the three recognised federations representing civilian employees at OFB's 41 factories said that they have taken a decision to 'postpone' the ongoing strike from Monday (August 26), claiming that they have been assured by the government that no final decision has been taken to corporatise the ordnance factories.

The three recognised federations are All India Defence Employees Federation, the Indian National Defence Workers Federation and the Bharathiya Pratiraksha Mazdoor Sangh.

They claimed that they decided to postpone the ongoing strike, 'considering the statement made by the Secretary, Defence Production, that no final decision has been taken by the government to corporatise the ordnance factories and also the assurance that all the concerns expressed by the federations will be considered by a high level committee'.

The joint statement said that the decision was taken following a meeting between the Secretary, Defence Production, with the federations.

It said that a decision has been taken at the meeting that a high level committee will be constituted by the government to discuss the issues raised by the federations.

Defence production at the ordnance factories, which manufacture sophisticated weapons and equipment from tanks and artillery guns to specialised vehicles and ammunition, was affected with the 82,000-strong work force going on a strike from August 20 to protest the Centre's plan to corporatise the Ordnance Factory Board.

The unions claimed that the government's motive was to ultimately privatise the defence production facilities of OFB, which is under the Defence ministry, while the government asserted that it has no such plans.  -- PTI

12:40   Former minister Arun Jaitley passes away
Former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, on August 9 after he complained of breathlessness, has died.

The 66-year-old veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader and a confidant of Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi, had been put on life support last week.

His health deteriorated late on Friday night, hospital sources had said.

Jaitley did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election presumably because of his ill-health.

In September 2014, he underwent bariatric surgery to correct the weight he had gained because of a long-standing diabetic condition.

He had undergone a renal transplant on May 14 last year at the AIIMS, and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had filled in for him in the finance ministry at that time.

Jaitley, who had stopped attending office since early April last year, was back in the finance ministry on August 23, 2018.

A lawyer by profession, Jaitley had been an important part in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet in the BJP government's first term.

He held the finance and defence portfolios, and often acted as the chief trouble-shooter of the government.

Jaitley's death comes on the heels of another former minister and a veteran BJP leader, Sushma Swaraj, who had passed away on August 6.  -- With agency inputs

08:09   Rahul, other opposition netas to visit J&K today
Congress's Rahul Gandhi and leaders from various opposition parties will visit Jammu and Kashmir today where restrictions have been imposed since the central government withdrew special status under Article 370 and split the state into two Union Territories earlier this month.

Among the parties that will be part of the opposition all-party delegation that will land at Srinagar are Congress, CPI-M, CPI, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party, Trinamool Congress and the DMK, news agency Press Trust of India reports, quoting sources.

Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma are the top Congress leaders other than Rahul Gandhi who are likely to visit. Azad was twice stopped at Jammu airport, most recently on Tuesday, and was "forcibly" sent back to Delhi on each occasion.

CPI-M's Sitaram Yechury, CPI's D Raja, DMK's Tiruchi Siva, RJD's Manoj Jha and Dinesh Trivedi from NCP will also be part of the delegation.

The report says the leaders also intend to visit some other parts of the state, if allowed to enter.

So far, the government has not allowed any political leader to enter the state.

The Jammu and Kashmir Department of Information and Public Relations on Friday evening requested the opposition leaders to not visit Srinagar as it would "disturb the gradual restoration of normal life."

"They would also be violating restrictions that are still there in many areas. Senior leaders should understand that top priority would be given to maintaining peace, order and preventing loss of human lives," the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Information and Public Relations tweeted.

Nearly 400 Jammu and Kashmir politicians and leaders, including former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, were either arrested or detained following the centre's decision to withdraw special status. The move also prompted a stringent security lockdown across the region that included the snapping of phone and internet services, as the centre looked to quell protests against its decision.
