It's Ajai Rai vs Modi in Varanasi, not Priyanka

So, it's the Congress party's Ajai Rai who will take on the PM Narendra Modi from Varanasi. Rumours of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra being fielded from there have finally been put to rest.

This is the second time Rai is being fielded from Varanasi -- he took the BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi in 2014 as well. In 2009, as a Congress candidate, Rai finished third behind BJP's Murli Manohar Joshi and Mukhtar Ansari, then with BSP.

Rai has been a five-time MLA from Uttar Pradesh and is a a local strongman in the Varanasi area, but ironically began his political career as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party's student wing, the ABVP.
