Sonia visits exhibition organised by Maneka Gandhi

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi paid a surprise visit to an exhibition organised by her sister-in-law Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi. The exhibition was held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, Janpath, a short walk from Sonia Gandhi's residence. Gandhi spent over an hour at the exhibition, whose theme was Women of India - Organic Festival.

The UPA chief's visit has come in the midst of political speculation that Maneka Gandhi's tryst with the BJP may not be her destiny and that the minister is keeping her distance from PM Narendra Modi.

Her son, Pilibhit MP Varun Gandhi has already been sent to forage in the political wilderness saddled as he is with his surname. It also doesn't help that he is in apparently in constant touch with with Priyanka Gandhi. The fact that Varun Gandhi has had to clarify that he is still with the BJP shows which way the wind is blowing and rumours are rife that the in the 2019 general elections he will leave the BJP and join the Congress to strengthen the hands of his estranged cousin Rahul Gandhi.

Where does that leave their mothers? Indira Gandhi's daughters-in-law never shared bonhomie privately and have never spoken to each other in decades. If Varun does leave the BJP, it remains to be seen where that will leave Maneka Gandhi.
