Prime Minister Narendra Modi lays the foundation stone of Purvanchal Expressway in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh.

"Purvanchal Expressway will take UP, especially Eastern UP, to graeter heights. More than Rs 23,000 Crore will be spent on it. All the cities, towns and places falling in the route will experience a change," Modi said in Azamgarh.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party government is working to create an environment of development in UP. What (Chief Minister) Yogi (Adityanath) ji did towards putting a check on crime and corruption, bringing investments to the state and making business easier for small traders, is commendable," Modi said.

Earlier in the day, hours before Modi was to lay the foundation stone for the Purvanchal Expressway, former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav sought to take the wind out of his sails by claiming it was his own government's project which was being relaunched.

"This was originally Samajwadi Purvanchal Expressway, but the word Samajwadi has been dropped," the Samajwadi Party chief told a press conference at the party headquarters in Lucknow.   -- ANI, PTI
