AIADMK rattled by CBI probe into coal import scam

The CBI on Tuesday began a probe into an alleged scam of Rs 487 crore in Tamil Nadu, relating to the over-valuation of inferior quality of coal imported from Indonesia which was passed on to NTPC and Aravali Power Corporation as superior quality in collusion with officials.

The probe pertains to the period when AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa was in power. Naturally, AIADMK officials are rattled by the CBI's decision to probe the coal import decision.

The action by the agency came on the basis of a Directorate of Revenue Intelligence investigation which had shown over-invoicing in the imports between 2011-12 and 2014- 15, officials said.

The CBI FIR names Ahmed A R Buhari, promoter of Coastal Energy Private Limited, Chennai, and unidentified officials of National Thermal Power Corporation, Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation, Aravali Power Company Pvt Ltd.

The agency booked them under the charges of criminal conspiracy cheating and provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, the officials said.

Next week, a team from CBI is expected to question a senior AIADMK functionary in connection with the alleged scam, apart from Buhari.

It has not exactly been raining good news for Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK, as this report says.
