D Raja, the CPI's Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu, is a serious contender for the post of General Secretary of the Communist Party of India.

The CPI meet which is scheduled for April in Kollam, Kerala, is likely to elect a new general secretary as Sudhakar Reddy the incumbent is unwell.  Reddy is also keen to retire.

Considering the waning influence of the party and the relevance of its ideology in today's India, the Left parties have decided to give the top slot to younger people, who can tour the country and organise pro-poor and pro-trade union rallies. For the 2019 general elecetions, the Left parties have decided to go against the Congress.  Raja has been trained by Indrajit Gupta and AB Bardhan, former general secretaries of the party.
