Scott Morrison has beaten rival Peter Dutton in a party vote to become the next prime minister of Australia.

Malcolm Turnbull, the current leader, was ousted as prime minister as his party held a second vote on its leadership in a week.

Turnbull said he received a petition from Peter Dutton that he requested as a condition for calling the meeting, triggering the meeting to take place at 12.20pm local time (3.20am UK time).

The ballot on whether or not to spill the leadership was successful, with 45 votes to 40. Julie Bishop, Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton were all running to be the party's leader, as expected.

Bishop was eliminated in the first round, ABC News reported.

In the final round, Morrison defeated Dutton, with 45-40 votes, the broadcaster reported.
