PM accompanies Vajpayee's cortege to Smriti Sthal

PM Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah walk along with the mortal remains of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the procession to Smriti Sthal for the funeral. Vajpayee will be accorded a state funeral. BJP president Amit Shah is also accompanying the funeral cortege. The distance between the BJP HQ and Smriti Sthal is around 4 kilometres.

Vajpayee's last rites would be performed on an elevated platform which is surrounded by greenery. Smriti Sthal is located between Jawaharlal Nehru's memorial 'Shanti Van' and Lal Bahadur Shastri's 'Vijay Ghat'. Former prime minister IK Gujral was also cremated at Smriti Sthal on the banks of river Yamuna in December 2012. The sthal is a common memorial ground.
