Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis to chair meeting of party MLAs and senior leaders over Maratha reservation issue in Mumbai today.

The Maratha Kranti Morcha protesters on Wednesday blocked the Pune-Solapur Highway in the ongoing Maratha stir over demand for reservation for the Maratha community. The Maratha Kranti Morcha released a press note according to which the community is organising a Jail Bharo Andolan for their major demands.

Protests took place at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, but were low-key. The Mumbai police had also tightened security for the Jail Bharo Andolan to maintain law and order. The police have also been asked to be on alert in other parts of Maharashtra.

A 35-year-old man committed suicide at Beed district while eight protesters attempted suicide in Latur on Tuesday as the agitation by the Maratha community demanding reservation intensified. As the state witnessed the fifth suicide over the issue, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that for the quota to be valid, it needs to stand legal and constitutional scrutiny.
