23:22   Don't support ban on Padmavati; opposed to all threats: Pb CM
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said today that he neither supported a ban on the movie 'Padmavati' nor backed those issuing threats to its actors and crew.
Singh decried attempts by what he claimed were "vested interests" to misinterpret his statement on the issue.
The chief minister made it clear that he was totally opposed to the threats being issued by certain hardline elements to the actors and directors of the film but reiterated that anyone feeling hurt by the alleged distortion
of historical facts had the right to peaceful agitation.
A distinction needs to be drawn between threats and protests, he said in a statement here.
"How can I seek or support a ban on the movie when I have not even watched it," asked Singh, refuting the "unfounded conclusions" that were drawn from his statement on Monday.
Clarifying his position, Singh said that nobody can be denied the right to disagree with others and protest peacefully in a civilised and democratic system, but nobody has the right to threaten someone with whom he/she does not agree on any issue.
"I totally condemn all people who are issuing threats and expect the law to take its course against them," he said, adding that any attempt to vitiate the country's peace and disturb its harmony needs to be dealt with effectively.
In his statement on Monday, Singh had said that as a military historian, who had studied history and even been to Chittor, he felt that distortion of historical facts was unacceptable.
"Cinematic license did not give anyone the right to twist historical facts," he had said, adding that protests were a justified recourse in a democratic system. -- PTI

22:55   Won't allow anyone to watch 'Padmavati': BJP leader Amu
Unfazed by a show cause notice served against him, Haryana BJP leader Suraj Pal Amu today said he would not allow anyone to watch "Padmavati", claiming that the heroic character of 'Rani Padmavati' has been shown in a bad light in the period drama.
"I do not want to see the movie and I will not let anybody else watch it. If you call it 'gundagardi' (hooliganism), it does not affect me," he told reporters in Chandigarh.
"Trailers of the movie are being shown on television and cinema halls. I saw one such trailer...The kind of scenes I watched in the trailer, I feel ashamed to share them with you.

"If the movie is run, you know Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat campaign is going on. The entire Kshatriya samaj will damage all the cinema halls of the country," he said.
Amu threatened that he would not let the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed movie be released in the country.
"If they are adamant on releasing the movie, we will also not let it be screened," he said.
Haryana's BJP unit had yesterday served the show cause notice on Amu, asking him to explain his reported remarks offering to double the Rs 5 crore bounty promised by a Meerut youth for beheading director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the female lead Deepika Padukone. -- PTI

22:25   Pak fears Saeed's release might invite international sanctions
Pakistan might face sanctions from the international community if it released Mumbai terror attack mastermind and Jamaat-ud Dawah chief Hafiz Saeed from house arrest, the government told a judicial body today.
Pakistan's Punjab government today produced Saeed before the Judicial Review Board comprising judges of the Lahore high court and sought a three-month extension in his detention.
An official of Punjab Home Department submitted before the review board that release of Saeed could lead to imposition of international sanctions on Pakistan.
"We plead the board not to order release of Saeed as Pakistan may face international sanctions," he requested.
He also told the board that the Federal Finance Ministry has "some important evidence" against Saeed to justify his detention. He further informed that Saeed had been detained on the basis of intelligence agencies' reports.
Strict security arrangements were taken at the LHC premises during Saeed's appearance before the board.
A good number of JuD workers also gathered on the courts premises in support of their leader. They shouted slogans in favour of Saeed and demanded his immediate release.
The board headed by Justice Abdul Sami Khan issued a notice to the federal finance ministry directing it to send its official to submit relevant record about Saeed.

Last month the Punjab Judicial Review Board had allowed 30-day extension to the detention of Saeed which will expire by the last week of this month.

On January 31, Saeed and his four aides -- Abdullah Ubaid, Malik Zafar Iqbal, Abdul Rehman Abid and Qazi Kashif Hussain --were detained by the Punjab government for 90 days under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 and the Fourth Schedule of Anti- Terrorism Act 1997.
However the last two extensions were made on the 'public safety law'.
The board, however, refused to give further extension to the detention of Saeeds four aides. They were later set free in the last week of October. -- PTI

20:51   Row erupts over 'chaiwala' jibe at PM Modi by Congress
A controversy has broken out after the Congress mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a 'chai-wala'.

The party's youth wing today posted a meme based on a photo of PM Modi, United States President Donald Trump and Britain Prime Minister Theresa May.

The blurbs of dialogue show the PM mispronouncing "meme", being corrected by Trump, and May dismissing the PM by stating, "You stick to selling tea."

The ruling party has said that the offensive post (now deleted) exemplifies the Congress' elitist mindset.

"Madam Sonia Gandhi & Mr Rahul Gandhi do u still believe that only u have a divine right to rule India? Country expects ur response on the tweet of the youth Congress, which is shameful & insulting to poor. U can delete the Tweet but ur thinking towards the poor stands exposed," Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said the party "strongly disapproves & rejects such humour". His tweet also said, "Differences on policy and opinion aside, Congress culture imbibes respect for PM and all political opponents."

In 2014, ahead of his thunderous victory, Modi was derided as a tea seller who can never be PM by Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar at a huge party gathering.

"Narendra Modi will never become the prime minister of the country... But if he wants to distribute tea here, we will find a place for him," Aiyar infamously said.

20:32   Why English-speaking, foreign-returned women begging in Hyderabad
Two middle-aged women, who speak English and claim to have worked in western countries, are among those caught while begging on city streets recently.
Telangana Prisons Department, in coordination with police and the civic body, has picked up and admitted 235 male beggars and over 130 women beggars to Anand Ashrams (special homes) since October 20 as part of a drive to make Hyderabad a beggar-free city.
"Two women, aged 50 and 44, both natives of Hyderabad, were among some 30 women caught begging near a dargah in Langer Houz. Police took them to Anand Ashram on November 11," a senior official said.
To their astonishment, the Ashram staff found that the two women spoke English well. The elder of the two told the staff that she had an MBA degree, and once worked as accountant in London before returning here. Her son, who was contacted by the authorities subsequently, confirmed this.
The younger woman said she was a Green Card holder and had worked in the US, said K Arjun Rao, superintendent of the Cherlapalli open-air jail and the Ashram in-charge.
"The fifty-year-old woman, who had lost her husband and was facing certain problems, approached a godman, and on his advise started begging near the dargah. Her son is an architect based in the US," he said.
The younger woman claimed that she started begging after her relatives cheated her out of her share of the ancestral property, he said.
"After taking undertakings (that they would not beg again) from them, we handed over both women to their relatives," the official said.
There are still some 12 women in the Ashram, he said.
The drive began after the Director General-Prisons and Correctional Services V K Singh told the government that the prison department will take care of the rehabilitation of beggars, on the lines of measures taken for the rehabilitation of prison inmates.
However, the drive was postponed after media reports sought to link it to the scheduled visit of United States President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, in Hyderabad for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit starting November 28. The drive would resume later, Singh had said. -- PTI

20:02   RJD declares Tejashwi as its CM face for next Bihar polls to be held in 2020
The Rashtriya Janata Dal today declared Lalu Prasad's son and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate for the next assembly election in the state.
A resolution on this was adopted at the party's national council-cum-open session meet in Patna which was attended by the party's top leaders.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad was formally declared as having been elected, unopposed, as the party's national president for the 10th consecutive term at the meet.
Senior party leader Jagdanand Singh read out the resolution that the party will fight the next Bihar assembly election under the leadership of Yadav, who would also head the government in the event of the RJD winning the poll.
The next election to the 243-member Bihar legislative assembly is scheduled for 2020.

Speculations have been rife about Tejashwi Yadav, Prasad's younger son, being declared the party's face for the next state polls.
A few days ago, Prasad stated that Tejashwi Yadav was "able" and "mature" and that there was nothing wrong if people were talking about him as the party's chief ministerial candidate.
Tejaswi Yadav is at present the leader of opposition in the assembly.
He served as the deputy chief minister in the grand alliance government of the RJD, the JD-U and the Congress.
The grand alliance collapsed in July this year after the JD-U deserted it and joined hands with the BJP to form the government. -- PTI

19:12   Padmavati: New release date only after CBFC clearance
The producers of the controversy-ridden film Padmavati will take a call on its release only after the censor board's go-ahead, a source said today.

The film starring Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji, was earlier scheduled to release on December 1.

On Sunday, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the studio behind Padmavati, announced in a statement that they were voluntarily deferring the release of the film out of 'respect and regard for the law of the land' including the Central Board of Film Certification.

They said a new release date will be announced once the 'requisite clearances' are in place.

But media reports have claimed that the film is now pushed for next year and the promotions have been put on hold.

The source from the production house, however, told PTI that no concrete decision has been reached yet.

"We will decide the release date of the film after getting the certificate from the CBFC. We will wait for the censor board to give us clearance and then decide which is the best date for the release," the source said.

CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi had yesterday said that the board should be given adequate time to come up with a balanced decision about the movie.

The Ministryof Information and Broadcasting also said today that the CBFC should be allowed to do its job.  -- PTI

18:42   Modi is like 'Brahma', only he knows when Parliament will be summoned: Kharge
Narendra Modi is 'Brahma, the creator', who controls everything and alone knows when the winter session will be convened, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said today, targeting the prime minister over the delay in summoning Parliament.

He alleged that democracy has suffered a 'big jolt' under the Modi government.

"I have talked to many ministers, the Speaker, Lok Sabha Secretary General, but no one knows the dates of Parliament session. Only one man knows and they call him Brahma, the creator. That's why till Brahma orders, we won't know the dates (of Parliament session)," Kharge told reporters.

"Democracy has suffered a big jolt under the Modi government. We term it as Modi 'Sarkar', because BJP members and even ministers in the government do not know anything," he said.

Kharge alleged the government was not convening the winter session to avoid facing criticism over issues it was uncomfortable about. Targeting the prime minister, Kharge said he was working at his own 'whims and fancies'.

"We condemn them (the government) for doing this. For (the sake of) democracy, we should run Parliament," he said.

Kharge said the prime minister did not want a Parliament session ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections, as he feared the Bharatiya Janata Party will be 'exposed'.

He claimed the government did not want any discussion on issues like demonetisation, GST or corruption.  -- PTI

18:06   200% with Padmavati: Ranveer Singh's 1st statement
Actor Ranveer Singh who essays the role of Allaudin Khilji in the film Padmavati reacts to the controversy over its release. This is Ranveer's first statement since the row over the film erupted. The actor speaking to ANI said, "I am 200% with the film and my Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I have been asked not to say anything, whatever the official stand is, you will get it from the producers. It's a very sensitive issue."

The Mumbai Police have beefed up the security of actor Deepika Padukone after Shri Rajput Karni Sena warned of physical harm in case she did not refrain from inciting public sentiments, a senior official said.

Karni Sena leader Mahipal Singh Makrana invoked the nose chopping of Surpanakha in the epic Ramayana and said if the Bollywood film Padmavati was not banned and Padukone does not refrain from fanning sentiments with her provocative language, the Rajputs will not lag behind in acting.

Amid a raging controversy surrounding Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting today said the Central Board
of Film Certification should be allowed to do its job. Amid rumours of a romantic dream sequence between Rajput queen Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji's characters in the film, many Rajput groups have been protesting against the movie, alleging that it distorts history.

The Delhi government has directed schools across the national capital to appeal to parents to continue restricting outdoor activities of their wards as long the pollution condition persists.

Schools also remained closed for a week when the situation turned worse. After two days of relatively cleaner air, the air quality of Delhi once again turned 'very poor' yesterday as the impact of sporadic drizzle in flushing out pollutants ebbed and more vehicles hit the streets on the first working day of the week. -- PTI

16:02   Triple Talaq bill in winter session of Parliament likely
The Centre is likely to introduce a bill in the winter session of Parliament to end the practice of Triple Talaq. ANI reports that a ministerial committee has been constituted to frame a law and the government proposes to bring this legislation in the forthcoming session of Parliament.

The Supreme Court had banned the controversial Triple Talaq practice in August this year for just six months. The apex court had also asked the Centre to bring a legislation for the same, else the injuction of the court would continue.

The law allows Muslim men to divorce their wives simply by uttering the word "talaq" three times. Muslim women say they have been left destitute by husbands divorcing them through "triple talaq", including by Skype and WhatsApp.

It has been at the centre of the controversy for a long period, raising questions of human rights, secularism and gender justice. Some Muslim groups see the issue as a matter of religious right while others, including the Centre, term it unconstitutional.

14:28   Saamna article compares BJP rule with British Raj
The Shiv Sena on Tuesday drew a comparison between the British era and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government stating that both had blind followers who believed their governance to be god's blessing.

Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece Saamna stated that whenever anything good happens in the country, the Centre or the BJP ruled states are appreciated but at the same time the party is not ready to take the blame when things go wrong.

"During the British rule, there were people who said that the English rule is god's blessing. Similarly, now we have people who say the same about Prime Minister Modi's. If it rains good, then it is because of the Modi government but when insects ruin crops then no one from the party will own up to the loss," the Shiv Sena in its editorial said.

Taking a dig at the BJP-led government at the Centre over the train accidents, the Shiv Sena said: "Bullet train is a Modi government's boon but, train mishaps are not. The BJP and its followers will not even shy away from crediting Modi for natural phenomena like sunrise."

The editorial, citing the British divide and rule policy, opined that businessmen running a country is not a good idea. "People who think that the Modi's rule is god's blessing are disrespecting the almighty. It is the common which is god in democracy," the editorial added. -- PTI

14:10   Bhansali as guilty as those making threats: Yogi
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today alleged that 'Padmavati' director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is no less guilty than those issuing threats to actors and others involved with the film and asserted that if there is any action, "it will be against both the sides". Lashing out at the film-maker, he said Bhansali was "habitual of playing with public sentiments".

The state government has said it would not allow the movie's release till certain "controversial portions" are removed. "No one has the right to take the law into own hands whether it is Sanjay Leela Bhansali or anyone else," the chief minister said. "I feel that if those threatening (the actors of the film) are guilty, Bhansali is no less guilty," he said.

The chief minister said if there is any action, "it will be against both the sides." On threats being issued to eliminate actors, Adityanath said, "Everyone should respect the feelings of each other. And I feel that if everyone has good thoughts and intentions, there would be amity in society." The film is based on Rajput queen Padmavati.

13:37   Chinas Rohingya doosra baffles India
"There is delightful irony that China has put forward a plan to resolve Rohingya refugees, which is so deceptively simple and yet didn't occur to Indian ingenuity. The 3-stage Chinese plan proposes to:

-- Achieve a ceasefire so Rohingyas are no longer displaced. (The ceasefire is now in effect.)

-- Encourage Myanmar and Bangladesh to keep communication lines open in a bid to arrive at a feasible solution by carrying forward their initial agreement on repatriating refugees in Bangladesh.

-- Find a long-term solution by addressing the root cause of the conflict through development of Rakhine state. (Xinhua).

It is a moot point whether the Chinese plan will work, because in the long run, as they say, we are all dead. What matters is time present."

While the settlement was arrived at earlier, payments were delayed due to a pending matter in the Calcutta high court. This concerned Britannia and the Commissioner of Income-Tax, Kolkata, which had showcaused the firm pertaining to withdrawal of money from the pension fund. That issue has now been sorted, it is reliably learnt.

A mail sent to Britannia remained unanswered till the time of going to press, reports Business Standard. But the company's Managing Director Varun Berry is said to have taken interest in the matter, helping in its resolution.

According to the terms of the settlement, Britannia was to release outstanding pension accumulations with due interest for members of the association. Similarly, it agreed to pay the differential in pensions as an ex-gratia lump-sum to those people who were not members of the association.

Ex-employees had moved court because Britannia had converted the defined benefit pension scheme to defined contribution type with retrospective effect, which went against pension fund rules.

The pensioners had argued that the arbitrary change in pension rules by Britannia would have reduced the accumulated benefits during the entire service period to a fraction of the eligible pensions and would also take away the benefits available to the spouse and children of a deceased pensioner -- as had been provided in the fund rules.

The pensioners have now agreed to accept the trustees appointed by Britannia, withdraw cases against the firm or other members and not oppose the change of the pension fund rules from defined benefit to defined contribution from 2008-09.

10:41   Don't want to be associated with you: Vadra slams Mallya's me-too
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra on Tuesday cried foul after liquor baron Vijay Mallya drew parallels citing both of them were victims of political vendetta.

In his defence before a UK court against India's request to extradite him in a money laundering case, the businessman had said that he was a political victim like Vadra and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Vadra, however, shrugged off Mallya's statement saying that he was a political victim but never misused his position or ran away with anyone's money. "Yet again, I came across the news, where somebody or the other is using my name as crutches, for their personal benefits... This time, none other than Mr Vijay Mallya citing my references in the UK courts. I would like to remind Mr Mallya, yes I am a political victim, but I never misused my position and have full faith in my country's judicial system... I never ran away with anyone's money from the country like him," Vadra said.

Mallya, who is wanted in India for financial irregularities involving a total amount of Rs 9,000 crore as well as money laundering, will be tried in the UK court on December 4.

Vadra also advised the now-defunct Kingfisher airline's chairman to come back to India and face all pending legal matters against him.

"My piece of advise to him is 'to please return to India and face all pending legal matters and to clear his dues to the people owed', and last but not the least, 'please avoid using my name', I do not wish to be associated with you in any matter," Vadra said.

Mallaya has been staying in the UK for over a year now. Vadra has been under the scanner for dubious land deals made in Haryana when the Congress was in power for 10 years. The deals were held up by BJP) during poll campaigns for years as proof of massive corruption on Congress watch. -- ANI

09:56   Delhi HC to hear plea against Farooq Abdullah over PoK remarks
The Delhi High Court will today hear a Public Interest Litigation seeking action against National Conference president Farooq Abdullah for his reported controversial remarks on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

President of Gharib Nawaz Foundation Maulana Ansar Raza filed the petition on November 17, and demanded that Abdullah's passport should be cancelled.

Recently, Abdullah said that the PoK belonged to Pakistan and the fact would not change no matter how many wars are fought over the issue.

Social activist Sukesh Khajuria also filed a complaint with District Magistrate against Abdullah, on the same day, and sought action against him under section 196 of CrPC, which deals with offences against the State and for criminal conspiracy to commit such offence.

A Bihar court has also ordered filing of FIR against Farooq Abdullah on charges of treason over his remarks on PoK.

India maintains that the PoK was invaded by Pakistan in 1947. On February 22, 1994, the Indian Parliament passed a unanimous resolution that demanded "Pakistan must vacate the areas of the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir, which they have occupied through aggression; and resolves that all attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of India will be met resolutely."  -- ANI

09:49   The decline of Parliament is a collective failure
If the noxious smog smothering north India has robbed Delhi of its once splendid winters, the Union government's disdain towards democratic niceties and necessities threatens to deny Parliament - or at least curtail - its customary winter session this November.

Of the three sessions - budget, monsoon, and winter - that Parliament has to hold each year, the last one is the shortest but that does not take away from its importance.

The session usually lasts around three weeks starting the third week of November. Notice for a session has to be given two weeks in advance after the cabinet committee on parliamentary affairs clears the dates.  Read more on the Telegraph.

09:44   States can't ban film before censor certificate: Nihalani on Padmavati
Former chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification Pahlaj Nihalani on Monday brushed aside Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's ban on the upcoming film Padmavati, saying that a movie cannot be banned in a state before receiving a certification from the censor board.

"Movies cannot be banned. A state can impose a ban only if it is deemed that the movie may disrupt law and order situation in the state, and only after film certification. A certificate is yet to be issued to Padmavati," Nihalani told ANI, adding, "Unless certificate is not issued, no state can make jumlas like 'we'll cut it' or 'we'll not let it release'."

Nihalani further informed that the producer of the movie can approach the court, if the scenes do get cut.

On Monday, Chouhan said that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus would not be allowed to release in the state unless the objectionable scenes were removed.

Responding to Padmavati actor Shahid Kapoor's statement that the movie should not be considered guilty even before it is provided for people to judge it, Nihalani said, "What does 'guilty' imply? Is making movie a crime?"

The CBFC chairperson, Prasoon Joshi, had earlier said that the board will arrive at a decision after a discussion, but the former chairperson downplayed it, saying that a chairman cannot decide the fate of a movie.

"The examination committee decides after watching the movie; the chairman cannot decide," he said.

"Unless the censor board pronounces its decision, opinion of everyone else is of no value," Nihalani added. -- ANI

08:45   Fingers raised at PM Modi will be broken, chopped off: BJP's Bihar chief
Bihar BJP president and Lok Sabha MP from Ujiyarpur Nityanand Rai said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had overcome huge odds to lead the country.

This should be a source of pride for all, he said, and if any finger or hand was raised against him, it would be broken or chopped off.

He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modis journey from his humble past to the post of PM.

Rai added: Unki or uthne waali ungali ko, uthne waale haath kohum sub milkeya to tod dein, zaroorat pari to kaat dein (Any finger or hand raised against the PM, we should get together to either broken or, if need be, chop it off.)

Deputy CM and his party colleague Sushil Modi shared the stage with Rai.

08:25   US lawmakers express concern over China's Belt and Road initiative
US lawmakers today expressed concern over the ambitious 'One Belt, One Road' initiative of China and sought recommendations for improving
development finance efforts.

While infrastructure investment is desperately needed across the region, there's more to the 'Belt and Road' initiative than meets the eye, said Congressman Ted Yoho, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.

Though China has promoted the program as generous win-win assistance to its fellow developing nations, the OBOR seems motivated primarily by self-interest, he said during a Congressional hearing on development finance in Asia.

The Belt and Road projects are financed by Chinese institution at high rates not typically found in the development context conducted by Chinese corporations that are often state-owned enterprise and utilise Chinese labour and material and seem to add little to local economies and can
bring unsustainable debt burdens, he said.

The program also seems to be closely aligned with China's strategic and military interests to be more than a mere coincidence, he added.

00:23   Kerala love jihad: Women commission chief again denied permission to meet Hadiya
The Chairperson of Kerala Women Commission was again denied permission on Monday to meet Hadiya, whose marriage to a Muslim man set off a legal war.

Hadiya's father had not allowed MC Josephine to meet her last week too.

The chairperson had visited to ensure Hadiya's safety during the journey to Delhi to be presented before the Supreme Court on November 27, the next date of hearing in the case.

The state women commission has now sought a report from the district police chief regarding her travel arrangements and safety measures.

Hadiya, 24, is currently living with her parents in Kottayam, who have alleged that her marriage to a Muslim man is a case of 'love jihad'.

The case is under consideration of the Supreme Court now, which had ordered the NIA investigation into it.

Hadiya's husband, Shafin Jahan, on September 16 filed a plea in the Supreme Court and requested to call off the NIA probe, alleging that the investigation agency "is not being fair" -- ANI
