Cong to launch signature campaign for 33% reservation for women

Come May 21, Congress party is all set to launch a nationwide signature campaign for 33 per cent reservation of seats in Assembly and Parliamentary elections for women.

Mahila Congress has zeroed in on the assassination day of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi - May 21 - to launch this campaign. This campaign will last till August 20 - his birth anniversary.

Mahila Congress President Shobha Oza said, "We will launch this massive signature drive throughout the country and force the government to fulfil Rajiv ji's dream of women empowerment. Through this campaign, we want women to get 33 per cent reservation in assembly and parliamentary elections."

It's been more than two decades that the Women's Reservation Bill, which is technically the 108th Constitution Amendment Bill, has been 'pending' for passage in the Lok Sabha.

It was during former Prime Minister Deve Gowda's tenure that Women's Reservation Bill was introduced in 1996. While the bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha in 2010, it still has a 'pending' status in the Lok Sabha.
