Some serving Army officers have initiated a WhatsApp message following the shocking, mindless and brutal killing of Lt Umer Faiyaz by Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar e Tayiba terrorists, suggesting how he can be honoured without expecting any government effort.

We reproduce the message, which has been quickly going viral, here as a PSA:

'Esteemed Seniors and friends, let us introspect. Have we paid our tributes to Lt Umer Faiyaz the way he deserves? His Kashmiri brethren killed him in cold blood, they humiliated his family and threw stones during his last rites.

'The family requested that the last rites be kept a low key affair, understandable. Some of us tweeted in his favour. Did all of us do it? NO. What a shame?

'Can we do something for him? Let all of us give him the honour without expecting any Govt effort. Let us show the nation how we honour Umer.

'Why not go to India Gate on Saturday and Sunday evening, light a candle there. Spend a few minutes and remember Umer at India Gate.

'In other places choose a central location and light a candle on Saturday and Sunday evening. He deserves our love and respect.

'This initiative would be better than the OROP, 7 th PC or NFU outcry -- or even the Nirbhaya protest marches.

'Let us prove that we respect our martyrs.

'Please pass the message far and wide -- make the nation sit up and watch.
'Let us be positive.'
