Liquor shops 220 metres from highways allowed: SC

Update on the SC verdict on liquor shop ban along highways.

While the Supreme Court reduces from 500 to 220 metres the distance of liquor shops from highways, it's only applicable areas with a population of up to 20,000. For those with a population of more than 20,000 the 500 metre liquor shop ban from national, state highways stands.

The distance relaxation also extended to hill states of Sikkim, Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh.

People who got licence for liquor vends prior to the Dec 15, 2016 verdict can operate till September 30. Others will have to shut down from tomorrow.
