Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said that the statements made by US President Donald Trump on the Paris climate accord were "shocking", and added that he hoped the USA would rethink its decision.

Trump had claimed that India signed the Paris climate agreement to get "billions and billions and billions of dollars in foreign aid", which earned him criticism from India.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj slammed the US, saying, "What Trump said is not the reality. We have signed the Paris accord not under any pressure nor for any money ...to say we did it for money, I totally reject that," she told reporters.

Swaraj said India had signed the accord because of Indian culture and ethos.

While withdrawing from the landmark Paris climate accord last week, Trump had said the deal was not tough on India and China.
"India makes its participation on receiving billions and billions of dollars from developed countries. Paris accord is very unfair at the highest level to the United States. The current India will be allowed to double its coal production and so does China," Trump alleged.
