On Saturday, at the G20 meet, the United States was represented briefly by Ivanka Trump when she filled in for her father Donald Trump at a round-table meeting with world leaders.

The US president had stepped away for a meeting with the Indonesian leader during the meeting.

However, the 35-year-old former fashion model took her father's seat and sat around the table with Chinese president Xi Jinping, Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, German chancellor Angela Merkel and British PM Theresa May.

A photograph of her presence tweeted by a Russian attendee sparked widespread criticism on social media.

Some users highlighted that Ivanka is unelected, or questioned her credentials - as a fashion brand owner - to sit at such a senior diplomatic meeting.
