Prime Minister Narendra Modi today raised the Vijay Mallya issue in his meeting with United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

In his meeting with British PM Theresa May in Hamburg, PM Modi asked for UK's cooperation for return of escaped Indian economic offenders, the ministry of external spokesperson Gopal Baglay tweeted after the meeting.

Mallya, the fugitive liquor baron sought by India for defaulting on several bank loans amounting to nearly Rs 9,000 crore, is facing a hearing before the Westminster Magistrates Court in London for the hearing in his extradition case.

India and the UK have an Extradition Treaty, signed in 1992, but so far only one extradition has taken place under the arrangement.
