United States President Donald Trump for the first time has admitted that Russia could have interfered in the US election.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda, Trump said he thinks Russia and possibly other countries could have meddled with the election he won in November.

Possible Russia interference in the election is currently the subject of a US investigation, however, the Kremlin has strongly denied all allegations.

"It could very well have been Russia but I think it could have been other countries and I wont be specific but I think a lot of people interfere," he said.

"Its been happening for a long time. Its been happening for many, many years," he added.

In the conference, he said that former president, Barack Obama, learnt of the hacking allegations in August but took no action until after the Republican was elected.

"He was told in early August, presumably by the CIA, that Russia was trying to get involved, meddling, pretty strongly with the election," he said.
