A PIL has been filed in the Bombay High Court against the Maharashtra government's ambitious Chhatrapati Shivaji memorial project, wherein a 192-metre-high statue of the Maratha warrior king will be constructed in the Arabian Sea at a total cost of Rs 3,600 crore.

The PIL, filed today by Mohan Bhide, a chartered accountant, claimed the government's decision to spend Rs 3,600 crore on such a project was "illogical and uncalled for".

"I have full respect and honour for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. But I am against the huge expenditure of hard-earned tax payers' money. The project of constructing a statue in the middle of the sea is nothing but a political stunt of all political parties operating in Maharashtra," the PIL said.
