23:42   Afghanistan lists 32 Pak-based terror training centres
The Afghanistan Government on Monday handed over to Pakistan a list of 32 terrorist training centres and 85 terrorists based in Pakistan.

The list, which was delivered by Afghanistan's ambassador in Pakistan, came in the backdrop of the brewing tension between the two nations following the last Thursday's deadly blast in a Sufi shrine Pakistan's Sindh Province.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, in a press release, announced that the list contained 32 training camps in Pakistan used as a breeding ground against Afghanistan.

'The letter also added a list of at least 85 Taliban operatives and their leaders in Pakistan. It included other terrorist groups such as the Haqqani terrorist network which have conducted major crimes against the people of Afghanistan to Pakistan. This was with the intention that Pakistan launches a crackdown against the insurgent groups and hand over the terrorists to the government of Afghanistan,' the press release added.

According to TOLOnews, the MoFA statement mentioned that Pakistan responded positively to the letter.

'The government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan expects to jointly work with the Pakistani government on the issue of the list and the concerns the two sides have over their problems so as to deal with matters in a responsible and constructive manner,' the press release stated.

Kabul expects Pakistan to take stern action against the terror camps and terrorist groups.

"You all know. It is due to old age. There are some issues. Right now, he is recuperating," Stalin told reporters at the party headquarters 'Anna Arivalayam' in Chennai.

Stating that tracheotomy, an incision in the windpipe was made to help the 93-year-old DMK patriarch breathe, Stalin said, "He is being given speech therapy."

"Hope he will be healthy soon," Stalin said.

Karunanidhi was admitted to a private hospital in the state capital in December for breathing difficulty due to throat and lung infection.

He was discharged after week-long treatment, with the doctors advising him complete rest.

A photograph of the DMK chief watching television from his bed was then released by the hospital to allay rumours about his health condition.

The DMK appointed Stalin as its working president on January 4, at the party's general council meeting where the party patriarch was not present.

22:01   India can develop space station, says ISRO chief
Indian Space Research Organisation chairman A S Kiran Kumar today said the country has the capability to develop a space station, but it needed a long-term approach and an ambitious planning.

His comment follows ISRO display of technological prowess last week by launching 104 satellites in a single mission.

"We have all the capabilities to set up a space station. The day the country takes the decision, we will 'ok' the project. Just draw a policy and provide us necessary funds and time," Kumar said.

He was in the city to attend the foundation day ceremony of Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology.

"We still talk about what would be the immediate benefits of a manned space mission. That is why the country hasn't made up its mind about when to invest in a space station," he said.

A long-term thinking was needed for setting up a space station, he said, adding "the sooner the better." Kumar said ISRO was also mulling tying up with the industry to enhance the country's satellite launching capability.

Many more satellites were needed to keep a tab on the land and weather conditions and to enhance the communication network, he said. This would be possible with increase in the number of satellite launches, for which the country needed to enhance the basic infrastructure and reduce the cost of equipment, he added.

20:55   Rs 2,000 note should be withdrawn in future: Ramdev
Yoga guru Baba Ramdev today said the government, in future, should reconsider the decision to introduce the Rs 2,000 note.

"High denomination currency never augurs well for any country, which is why the Prime Minister has stressed the digital transactions. The government should reconsider it (Rs 2,000 note) in future," Ramdev said.

Speaking to reporters, he said he did not like the decision to introduce Rs 2,000 note after the demonetisation.

"I don't like the Rs 2,000 note. High denomination currency is responsible for political and economic crimes. It is behind the black money, terrorism, Naxalism and also used for luring the voters during the elections," he said.

Crores of rupees in high denomination currency can be stored on a small space, like in a suitcase, he said.

The government has sent a memorandum to Khadi and Village Industries Commission, making it mandatory for the body to approach the PMO through the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises ministry to seek approval before publishing photographs of the Prime Minister.

The move comes over a month after the photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Khadi and Village Industries Commission's diary and calendar kicked off a row.

18:20   Modi and Shah are terrorists: SP leader
A Samajwadi Party minister today stoked a controversy by calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah "terrorists" which invited sharp reaction from the Centre's ruling party which said use of such "intemperate language" shows SP's "frustration".

"Both of them want to create an environment of fear in the state for votes. They (Modi and Shah) are terrorists. They are creating terror in our democracy," Rajendra Chaudhary told reporters in Lucknow.

He said "BJP has nothing" to say about its work and therefore its leaders are making "wild allegations".

"The BJP knows it is losing the UP polls and it will perform worse than even in Bihar," said Chowdhury, who is also a minister in the Akhilesh Yadav Cabinet.

The prime minister and the BJP national president have been attacking the ruling Samajwadi Party in their campaign rallies.

The SP leader today said Shah "used to terrorise voters" from the dais and many times its own workers "get afraid of him due to his behaviour".

BJP has reacted sharply to the "intemperate language" of the leader.

"It is their (SP's) frustration and people of UP will punish them for such intemperate language against the PM," said BJP vice president and party's UP in-charge Om Mathur.

17:31   OPS camp MLAs may be disqualified: Reports
The O Panneerselvam faction is all set to get another jolt with disqualification staring in the face of 11 of its MLAs, say reports.

While the OPS group cannot be written off as members have been keeping up a constant anti-Sasikala refrain and projecting itself as the true heirs of J Jayalalithaa, their numbers remain just 11. If there are no major shake-ups in the government, it may well survive the remaining four years and the task of keeping his small flock together could prove all the more difficult for OPS.

17:06   BSP is now Behenji Sampatti Party, says PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday mocked at Mayawati's opposition to note ban, saying the BSP is no longer Bahujan Samaj Party but 'Behenji Sampatti Party'.

At an election rally in Orai region of Jalaun in Bundelkhand region, the Prime Minister said those who deposit wealth for themselves can never solve the problems of people. He also attacked the SP and Congress for criticising the demonestisation decision.

"Where has Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) reached today... When I announced note ban on November 8 last year, arch-rivals SP and BSP, who never see eye-to-eye, came together... I was amazed when I launched war against corruption and asked for the details of black money. They came together and all, including the Congress, started speaking the same language,' Modi said.

The main concern of the parties in Uttar Pradesh was not note ban, but that they did not get enough time to stash away the ill-gotten money.

"Behenji (Mayawati) alleges that government was ill-prepared... Was it the government or it was you who was not prepared... She said one week should have been given (before implementing note ban)... Mulayam also said the same,' he said."Money started being deposited in banks all of a sudden (after note ban) and (Mayawati) started shouting as why is it only at election time that the account of her brother has been made public... Why is it being discussed that 100 crore have been deposited,' he said.

"Arrey Behenji discussion not because elections are being held, but because you have deposited 100 crore after note ban... BSP is no longer Bahujan Samaj Party... bahujan toh Mayawati me simat gaya hai... It is Behenji Sampatti Party now. Those who deposit wealth for themselves, can they solve your problem?' he asked.

16:48   Hitler's phone sells for more than USD 240,000
Adolf Hitler's personal telephone, which the Fuehrer used to dictate many of his deadly World War II commands, sold at auction for USD 243,000, the US house selling it announced.

Originally a black Bakelite phone, later painted crimson and engraved with Hitler's name, the relic was found in the Nazi leader's Berlin bunker in 1945 following the regime's defeat. The auction house Alexander Historical Auctions, which did not reveal the winning bidder's identity, had estimated its worth between USD 200,000 and USD 300,000. The starting bid was set at USD 100,000.

The Maryland company auctioned off more than a thousand items including the phone and a porcelain sculpture of an Alsatian dog for USD 24,300. Both winners bid by telephone.

More than 70 years old, the Siemens rotary telephone is embossed with a swastika and the eagle symbolic of the Third Reich. Alexander House dubbed the phone -- which Hitler received from the Wehrmacht, Nazi Germany's armed forces -- as "arguably the most destructive 'weapon' of all time, which sent millions to their deaths." It said Hitler used it to give most of his orders during the last two years of World War II.

16:40   UP polls: BJP attacks 'shehzaadey' Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav
Ridiculing the alliance between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party for the ongoing assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday sardonically remarked that the 'shehzaadey' of the alliance - Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and incumbent Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav - have disappointed their respective parents and hence, cannot do anything good for the state.

Referring to Rahul Gandhi, BJP president Amit Shah said, "One has disappointed his mother," adding, "while the other one has made his father suffer," while training his guns at Akhilesh Yadav.

"The whole of Uttar Pradesh is annoyed with both of them. Their partnership cannot bring development in the state," Shah added.

Shah also asked the SP-Congress alliance to list down what all the state government did for the development of Uttar Pradesh in its tenure.

The BJP leader also accused the alliance of giving benefits to people on the basis of their castes.

"If your caste and religion do not suit them, they will not give you the laptops. But the BJP will give free laptops to every youth without any bias," Shah asserted.

Meanwhile, SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary courted controversy by branding Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah as 'terrorists', adding that they are trying to mislead voters in Uttar Pradesh to gather support for the party.

Today is the last date for withdrawal of nominations for the seventh and last phase of Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

40 constituencies in Eastern Uttar Pradesh will go to polls in this phase on March 8.

Over 61 percent polling was recorded till 5 p.m. in the third phase of Assembly elections in the state yesterday.

Voting was held for 69 seats spread over 12 districts including the capital Lucknow.

15:24   Don't campaign for the donkeys of Gujarat: Akhilesh to Amitabh
Superstar Amitabh Bachchan was on Monday dragged into the political slugfest in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections after UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at a rally in Rae Bareli appealed to Bachchan to not advertise for the donkeys of Gujarat.

The remark kicked up a row as it was seen as an apparent dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is from Gujarat. Bachchan, whose wife Jaya Bachchan is a Samajwadi Party MP, is the brand ambassador of Gujarat Tourism.

Taking a dig at the ad, Yadav said on Monday, "Main sadi ke mahanayak se appeal karta hoon ke Gujarat ke gadhon ka prachar mat karein (I appeal to the superstar of the century to not campaign for the donkeys of Gujarat)."

BJP leader GVL Narsimha Rao said, "Akhilesh Yadav has lost his balance. This comment is a personal attack and his desperation can be seen. It is a very cheap and derogatory remark by the Chief Minister."

SP leader Udayveer Singh said, "The Prime Minister has been saying that UP is number 1 in loot, rape and crime. However, the CM has only said that even the donkeys of Gujarat are being glorified. The CM has not said anything wrong."

14:58   Ganga ki kasam! Akhilesh's response to PM's bijli barb
UP CM Akhilesh Yadav who was addressing a rally near PM Narendra Modi's constituency in Varanasi this morning, hit back at the PM for his comments that the state was facing an acute power crisis.

PM Modi yesterday, in an election rally in Fatehpur, had accused the Chief Minister of discriminating on religious grounds, saying, "If there's electricity on Ramzan, it should also be there on Diwali. There must be bijli (power) both on Eid and Holi... There should be no discrimination."

So, this morning at a rally in the Gandhi bastion of Rae Bareli, Akhilesh hit back saying, "You revere Ganga maiyya (river Ganga). Why don't you swear on the Ganga and tell us... is the Samajwadi Party government giving 24-hour electricity in Varanasi or not?"

At the PM's speech in Fatehpur, around 120 km from state capital Lucknow, he referred to the widely-shared image of Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi at their roadshow in Agra, with the Congress Vice-President bending to avoid electricity wires as he rode on a Mercedes SUV with the Chief Minister.

"One ducked as he usually does. As for Akhilesh Yadav, he didn't need to - he knew the line is dead because there is no electricity anywhere," jibed the Prime Minister as the crowd roared in approval.

PM Modi has said in several rallies in UP that the BJP would end "vikas ka vanvaas (exile of development) if it was voted in.

14:28   RBI increases cash withdrawal limits to Rs 50K
The Reserve Bank of India on Monday increased the weekly limit on withdrawal of cash from savings bank accounts to Rs 50,000.

The limit will be removed from March 13.Earlier, the RBI had decided to remove the limits on cash withdrawals in two phases, keeping with the pace of remonetisation.

Cash withdrawal limits have been in place since November 8, 2016 following the Narendra Modi-led central government decision to demonetise Rs 500 and 1000 notes.

Government and RBI had imposed limits on withdrawal of money from ATMs and bank branches in view of the currency shortage following demonetisation. These limits, however, are being gradually eased, with RBI pumping in new notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000.

The decision to increase the withdrawal limit was taken after the RBI announced its sixth bi-monthly monetary policy review. On the basis of remonetisation, RBI had earlier eased restrictions on cash withdrawal from current accounts, cash credit accounts and withdrawal through ATMs on February 1.

13:47   Wine, women, poor in newly minted TN CM's to do list
On the first working day after Edappadi Palaniswami won the trust vote and took over as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, five important files have been signed.

According to reports, Palaniswami is occupying J Jayalalithaa's chambers at the state secretariat and got to work this morning.

The first thing he did was to give his consent to close another 500 TASMAC shops. The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) is a company owned by the state government, which has a monopoly over wholesale and retail vending of alcoholic beverages and controls IMFL trade in the state and operates more than 6,000 shops across the state.

The AIADMK buoyed up its women's voter base by increasing maternity assistance from Rs 12,000 to RS.18,000 and offering a 50 per cent subsidy for working women to buy two wheeler.

The CM also doubled the dole to unemployed youths doubled and ordered the construction of 5000 houses at a cost of Rs 1.70 lakh per house for fishermen.

The Palaniswami government on Saturday won the confidence vote in the Tamil Nadu assembly by a comfortable 122-11 margin after high drama and bedlam in the House.

The vote was preceded by eviction of principal opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and walkout by its allies, which have 98 legislators in the 234-member House, in protest.

Former Chief Minister Panneerselvam could muster only 11 votes, ending the prolonged stalemate triggered by his rebellion and by conviction of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief V K Sasikala after being elected the Legislature Party leader.

Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, while appointing Edappadi K Palaniswami as the chief minister after he was propped by Sasikala, had given him 15 days time to prove his majority.

The vote was taken after two adjournments due to pandemonium and charges of attacks by DMK members.

Samajwadi Party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary courted controversy by branding Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah as 'terrorists', adding that they are trying to mislead voters in Uttar Pradesh to gather support for the party.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Chaudhary stated that misleading voters is a political crime, a crime which is being committed by Shah and Prime Minister Modi, adding that the two 'magicians' from Gujarat are trying their level best to change the face of politics in UP.

"The people of UP will not disrespect politics at any cost. Nobody should take UP voters for granted; they know everything about politics," claimed Chaudhary.

The UP assembly polls has turned into a battleground of words, added Chaudhary, further claiming that the State has seen a wave of development under Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, adding that Prime Minister Modi's blame-game has no base.

10:33   Does PM Modi want to be a municipal commissioner: Congress on 'diwali electricity' remark
More flak for PM's electricity for cemeteries comment: The Congress on Monday took a jibe at him asking if he wanted to become a municipal commissioner, since he was showing a keen interest on local issues as distribution of electricity.

Responding to Prime Minister Modi's 'Diwali, Ramzan bhed-bhav remark' Congress leader Salman Khurshid told ANI that this kind of language should not be used to by the leader of the nation and added that he should learn to be a Prime Minister.

"I believe every Indian citizen be it Hindu, Muslim or Sikh, Christian anyone, their festivals should be given every possible assistance that is reasonable. And I don't think so we should be treating these festivals only like festivals. India has traditionally treated all festivals as festivals of everybody... I think Mr. Modi is not learning how to be a Prime Minister which is a very sad thing. A Prime Minister no matter of which party is the PM of the country, but Mr. Modi just isn't learning to be the PM of the country," he said.

Further attacking Prime Minister Modi over his 'diwali electricity' remark, Khurshid added, "is Mr. Modi wanting to become a municipal commissioner? he is descending to talking about electricity being provided on particular days and in particular places. I have never known this to be an issue with Diwali. Diwali is a festival of lights and in fact not only is electricity provided, but also people add to that by placing enormous number of diyas and various other thing that light up the atmosphere. I have never heard of this issue. And if this is an issue, it is not for the Prime Minister to be raising it but something which has to be handed locally," he added.

Earlier on Sunday, while addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur, Prime Minister Modi said, "In a village, if a cemetery can be constructed, so should a cremation ground. If electricity is supplied during Ramzan, so electricity should also be supplied during Diwali as well. There should not be any discrimination on the basis of religion and caste."

10:22   Cong's advise to PM: Look into your 'Karam Kundali'
The Congress Party on Monday tore into Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the wake of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections saying that the BJP-led NDA Government is going to lose the polls and advised the latter to look into his 'Karam Kundali'.

"Instead of looking at 'Janam Kundli' of Congress Party it is time for BJP to look into their 'Karam Kundali' for loss is written there on account of the demons of the demonetisation and complete dejection of people with 30 months of Prime Minister Modi government's rule," Congress leader Randeep Surjewala told ANI.

Surjewala further asserted that the third phase of assembly election in Uttar Pradesh has conclusively established that the Samajwadi Party and Congress alliance is winning decisively in the state.

"It is proved by the intemperate language of Prime Minister Modi and by the choice of completely reprehensible language by BJP president Amit Shah. Both Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah are speaking the language of the leader who has lost the war. BJP will lose all the five states," he said.

The Prime Minister also said the 'exile of development' must end in Uttar Pradesh, while appealing the people to cast their vote for a government which ensures safety in the state.

08:33   Congress to file complaint with EC against PM over cemetery remarks
Coming down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for drawing a parallel between Hindu and Muslim festivals, the Congress has said that it would file a complaint with the the Election Commission of India to take stock of the matter and urged the former to refrain from making such statements which bring 'disrepute' to his post.

"The prime minister is invoking communalism in order to polarise voters. The ECI should take note of this because it is a clear violation of its rules and regulations. He has brought disrepute to his post and has violated the principles for which he took his oath. These conservative ideas are subscribed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the like minded organisations. It seems that the PM is unable to come out of this mentality. We hope the ECI will take action in this," Congress leader Anand Sharma said.

The PM also said the 'exile of development' must end in Uttar Pradesh, while appealing the people to cast their vote for a government which ensures safety in the state.

"'Vikas ka vanvaas' in Uttar Pradesh must end now. The country is moving ahead at fast pace and so must Uttar Pradesh," he said.

A Jet Airways flight from Mumbai to London, with more than 300 people, triggered a major scare when it lost contact with the Air Traffic Control after getting intercepted by German fighter jets. The flight then had to be escorted by German Air Force fighter planes before it landed.

The contact was eventually re-established through an SOS channel.

"The contact between Jet Airways flight 9W 118, from Mumbai to London Heathrow, of February 16, 2017, and the local ATC, was briefly lost while flying over German airspace. The communication was safely restored within a few minutes," Jet Airways spokesperson said.
