20:56   William will have to choose between football, Harry's wedding
Britain's Prince William will have a slightly tough choice to make on May 19 as the wedding date of his younger brother Harry to actress Meghan Markle clashes with a football final which the Duke of Cambridge is duty-
bound to attend.

Prince Harry and his American actress fiancee Markle's wedding date announcement came yesterday. The fifth in line to the Britain's throne had revealed his engagement to the 36-year-old actress, best known for her role as Rachel Zane in the legal drama "Suits", last month.

The couple had confirmed that their wedding ceremony will take place some time in May at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Prince William, the second in line to the British throne, would have had the May 19 date in his diary for a long time as it is the Football Association Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The 35-year-old William is duty-bound to attend in his role as the president of the FA and present the trophy.

However, the unusual circumstances of it clashing with his brother's wedding mean he would have to pass on the task to someone else.

No decision has yet been made on who would hand over the coveted silverware to the winner of the hugely popular football championship, last year presented to Arsenal Football Club by Prince William.

20:21   We did our best in treating Jayalalithaa, says Apollo Hospital
Two days after former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa's nephew appeared before an inquiry commission probing her death, the founder of Apollo Hospital on Saturday reiterated that his doctors did their best while treating the late CM.

"An inquiry is on. Former Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa was brought to hospital in a critical condition, showed significant progress later, but disease pattern was such and due to acute respiratory distress syndrome she passed away. Our team of doctors did the best they could," Dr Prathap C Reddy, Apollo Hospitals Founder-Chairman, said while talking to the media.

Jayalalithaa, popularly known as 'Amma', was taken to Chennai's Apollo hospital on September 22 last year and treated in the hospital for 75 days before she breathed her last on December 5.

Following her death, allegations of foul play began to do the rounds and state forest minister Dindigul Sreenivasan even claimed that all cabinet ministers had lied to the people about hospitalisation and death of the former AIADMK general secretary.

Subsequently, a one-man commission was constituted and a probe under a retired Madras High Court judge, Justice Arumugasamy, was initiated on October 30.

The commission, whose constitution was challenged in the Supreme Court through a plea, which the apex court later rejected, will submit its findings early next year.

20:01   2018 polls 'most likely' my last election: Siddaramaiah
Indicating that the 2018 assembly polls could "most likely" be his last election, Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah today said he would be contesting to stop the BJP from coming to power.

"Most likely the forthcoming assembly election will be the last election for me," Siddaramaiah told reporters at Raichur in north Karnataka.

However, he maintained that he would remain active in politics, but not contest assembly polls.

Earlier during the 2013 assembly polls, Siddaramaiah had said it was his last election.

Conceding that he had during the 2013 polls stated it would be his last election, the chief minister said he was contesting to stop BJP from getting back to power.

"Looking at elections and the political system, I had felt it is enough. But looking at communal politics by the BJP, I felt I should stand in election. Also, the high command said that I should contest," he said.

"I have the responsibility to see to that BJP does not come back to power, so I'm contesting," he added.

The Congress has announced Siddaramaiah would be the party's face during the 2018 assembly polls.

19:41   Airtel blocked from Aadhaar platform after being accused of misusing data
In its strongest action yet, the UIDAI has temporarily barred Bharti Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank from conducting Aadhaar-based SIM verification of mobile customers using e-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) process as well as e-KYC of payments bank clients.

The action follows allegations of Bharti Airtel using the Aadhaar-eKYC based SIM verification process to open payments bank accounts of its subscribers without their 'informed consent'. UIDAI also took strong objection to allegations that such payments bank accounts are being linked to receive LPG subsidy.

UIDAI, in an interim order, "suspended e-KYC licence key of Bharti Airtel Ltd and Airtel Payment Bank Ltd with immediate effect," sources with direct knowledge of the development said.

This essentially means Airtel would not be able to, in the interim, carry out 'electronic-verification' or link mobile SIMs of its customers with their 12-digit biometric national ID Aadhaar though the efficient and paperless e-KYC (or electronic Know Your Customer) process of UIDAI.

19:33   Army totally geared up to face any situation in Dokalam: GOC- in-C
The Army is totally geared up to face any situation in the Doklam sector and any mischief will be dealt with "properly", General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Lt Gen Abhay Krishna of the Eastern Command said today.

He was asked about China reportedly stationing its troops in Doklam, where the two countries were locked in a standoff for over two months earlier this year after the Chinese army tried to build a road in the area claimed by Indian-ally Bhutan.

India feared the road, if completed, would allow China to cut off its access to its northeastern states. The standoff ended in September after the two countries mutually agreed to withdraw their troops from the area.

Stating that he would not name anyone specifically, Lt Gen Krishna said the Indian Army is in high spirits and ready to take on any mischief.

"We are totally prepared, geared up; let anybody do any mischief and he will get it back nice and proper," he told reporters.

Lt Gen Krishna was speaking at the Eastern Command headquarter at Fort William here after a wreath-laying ceremony on 'Vijay Diwas' to commemorate India's victory over Pakistan in 1971, which led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

18:25   Cong's working style, corrupt ways remain same: BJP on Rahul's elevation
The BJP today dubbed the Congress as a "corrupt thought process" as it shrugged off Rahul Gandhi's elevation as its president, saying its working style and "corrupt ways" remained the same.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra launched a sharp attack on the Congress after Gandhi attacked the ruling party soon after replacing her mother Sonia Gandhi as its president.

Patra cited the sentencing of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda, who was supported by the Congress, in a corruption case to hit out at the party, claiming it would remain corrupt despite the change in leadership.

He said it was an irony that despite the Congress not being in power for four years, corruption cases were still tumbling out and people jailed for corruption they did when it was in power.

"This speaks volumes about the thought process, the working nature of Congress party. So a new president or an old president, the working style of Congress party, the corrupt ways of Congress party still remain the same," he said.

18:05   Denied hospital admission, Odisha woman gives birth in drain
In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old tribal woman delivered a baby girl in an unused drain on the premises of a hospital on Friday after she was allegedly denied admission.

According to the woman's relatives, the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital refused to admit her without the required medical documents.

The authorities later admitted the mother, identified as Daina Muduli, and her newborn to the hospital after she lay unattended for nearly an hour.

"The child was shifted to the special neo-natal care unit and the mother was admitted to the general ward. Both the mother and child are stable," hospital superintendent Sitaram Mohapatra said.

Daina Muduli, a resident of Janiguda village in Dasmantpur block, had come to the hospital in the district headquarter town on Thursday with her mother and sister to meet her husband Raghu Muduli, who had been admitted on Wednesday because of fever.

On Friday morning, Daina felt labour pains and visited the gynaecology ward but the staff allegedly refused to admit her. "The staff refused to admit my daughter as we had not brought the required documents. Hence, my daughter gave birth in the drain," said Gouramani Muduli, Daina's mother.

When contacted, Koraput chief district medical officer Lalit Mohan Rath denied the allegations, terming them 'baseless'.

17:02   Justice will be given to us: Hemraj's wife on Aarushi murder case
Widow of servant Hemraj, Khumkala, on Saturday said she believes in the Supreme Court and justice will be given to her in sensational 2008 Arushi-Hemraj murder case.

Khumkala said, "I believe the Supreme Court will do us justice and that is why I have come here. I am not surprised that the court let the Talwars walk free and cancelled their life sentences on the basis of lack of material evidences but this has disheartened me".

Earlier on Friday, in a fresh twist to the murder case, the wife of Hemraj approached the apex court challenging the acquittal of Rajesh and Nupur Talwar by the Allahabad High Court.

In October, the Talwar couple, who were accused in the murder of their 14-year-old daughter Arushi and their domestic help Hemraj, walked free from the Dasna jail after the Allahabad High Court acquitted them of charges of their daughter's murder, setting aside the CBI court's earlier order.

A high court bench, comprising of Justice BK Narayana and Justice AK Mishra, had reserved its verdict, in September, in the appeal filed by Aarushi's parents, who were sentenced to life in the jail.

The Talwars had been lodged in the Dasna jail since November 2013 in connection with the twin murders.

On May 16, 2008, Aarushi was found murdered inside her bedroom in the flat in Jal Vayu Vihar and her throat slit with surgical precision.

It was initially suspected that house help Hemraj had killed Aarushi.

However, the case took a shocking turn when Hemraj's body was recovered two days later from the terrace of the same flat.

The police then began to suspect the Talwars and said Rajesh had murdered the two after finding them in an "objectionable" position.

16:10   Rahul Gandhi is captain of 'sinking ship': BJP's Babul Supriyo
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Babul Supriyo on Saturday termed Congress President Rahul Gandhi as captain of the 'sinking ship'.

The Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Supriyo said, "Rahul Gandhi is the captain of a sinking ship. I would enjoy his speech back home as he must have said something humorous. I have heard his speech is already doing rounds on social media but I think he should talk about himself also."

He added that Rahul Gandhi is talking only about the BJP, which is already doing wonders.

"He is talking about 21st century but I am not sure the party will remain even till this century given that its performance is falling apart every day. Definitely Congress has a great history and I hope it has a great future too," the BJP leader stated.

Earlier in the day, Rahul took over as the Congress president by succeeding his mother Sonia Gandhi.

The 47-year-old was officially declared party president in a ceremony held at the party's 24 Akbar Road headquarters.

15:29   Delhi gang rape case: Victim's mother awaits justice 5 years after her death
Awaiting justice, the Delhi gang rape victim's mother said on Saturday that even after five years the culprits are alive.

It was on this day in December 2012, when six people gang-raped a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, in a moving bus.

"Even after five years, her culprits are alive. If justice isn't served on time, people cease to be scared of law. A strong law needs to be formulated and mindset of everyone, be it a politician or a common man, needs to be changed," said Asha Devi, the mother of the victim.

She said that her family is still standing at 2012.

"They promised to put CCTV cameras in buses but where are all those CCTV cameras? Their promises were just words and have not been implemented. Things haven't changed in India. Crime against women still continues and no one says anything," she said.

She added that even after requesting the government for justice no action has been taken yet.

"I haven't asked or begged in front of anybody for any favours. I haven't asked for job for my husband or any other family member. I always ask other for justice. This case was pending in the Supreme Court for the past two years," said Devi.

Asha further emphasised the fact that no action has been taken on women safety in India.

"Women are not paid proper attention anywhere in India. Nobody cares about women safety. On ground level nothing had actually changed or modified. Mentality of our society, system, police, and other officials need to be changed."

She also said that priority should be given to women safety and security.

The woman succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital on December 29, 2012.

14:37   Five years since Delhi gang rape: Women to sleep in parks on Saturday
For most people, sleep is a way to relax. But, on December 16, women in several cities across India will head to the nearest public park to 'sleep' as a form of protest.

December 16, 2017, marks five years since the gang-rape of Nirbhaya. According to a press release by Bengaluru-based Blank Noise, a community/public art project that seeks to confront street harassment, the 'Meet to Sleep' event will be held to mark the day.

The idea behind the initiative is to convey the message that women have the right to be safe, even when they are defenceless. So citizens will take a nap in their nearest public park, or assemble to sleep in large groups. "You can sleep alone. Or together," according to Blank Noise's website. It says sleep is protest.

Through this action, women assert the right to live free from fear, warnings and blame. 'Meet to Sleep' is for the right to live defenceless, even trusting and to create a new reality, through collective action because collective action is powerful in building new collective memory.

14:06   US may stop spouses of H-1B visa holders from working
The Trump administration is considering revoking an Obama-era rule that extends work authorisation to the spouses of H-1B visa holders, a move that could affect thousands of Indian workers and their families.

Since 2015, the spouses of H-1B, or high-skilled, visa holders waiting for green cards have been eligible to work in the US on H-4 dependent visas, under a rule introduced by the previous Obama administration.

In 2016, more than 41,000 of H-4 visa holders were issued work authorisation. This year till June more than 36,000 H-4 visa holders were issued work authorisation.

The H-1B programme attracts foreign specialised workers to come to the United States for employment, many of them from India and China.

"DHS is proposing to remove from its regulations certain H-4 spouses of H-1B nonimmigrants as a class of aliens eligible for employment authorisation," said the Department of Homeland Security in a latest regulation.

According to the notice, the changes is being made in light of US President Trump's 'Buy American and Hire American' order issued earlier this year.

According to CNN, while changing the rule wouldn't prevent spouses of H-1B holders from pursuing other avenues for work authorisation, it could deter a number of high-skilled immigrants from staying in the US if their spouses can't easily find work.

12:19   Karnataka decides not to permit Sunny Leone New Year eve event
The Karnataka government today decided not to permit Bollywood actress Sunny Leone's New Year eve show and elsewhere in the state following protests from Kannada outfits.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and some other organisations have been opposing the proposed event on December 31 alleging that the invitation to Sunny Leone will be an "assault" on the city's culture.

For the past one week, the KRV members have been agitating in the city, taking out rallies and burning effigies of Sunny Leone.

"I have instructed (authorities) not to allow such events. Don't bring her (Leone) here. People are opposed to the event. Let them (organisers) organise events related to Kannada culture and literature, which is our heritage," said Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy.

KRV office-bearer Harish welcomed the government decision.

"It is a victory for us. Government has cancelled the programme. Had it happened here, we would have brought activists from 20 districts to Bengaluru and held a mega protest here."

>> Congress took India to 21st century, but the PM, today, is taking us back to the medieval times

>> We are now being compelled to imagine that businesses can be built without harmony that only one man himself is the voice of reason. Expertise, experience  and knowledge can be cast aside for personal glory

08:52   Republicans unveil final tax bill
The ruling Republican party today unveiled the final version of their tax bill which promises massive tax cuts for the middle class and businesses.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act lowers the corporate tax rate to 21 per cent (beginning January 1, 2018) down from 35 per cent, the largest reduction in the history of the United States.

The voting on the $1.5 trillion tax cut bill will be held next week and if passed will be the most sweeping tax overhaul in decades.

President Donald Trump, who had promised tax-cut during his election campaign, now wants the bill signed into law by the end of the year.

"By lowering tax rates, simplifying the rigged and burdensome tax code, and repealing the failed tax on lower- and middle-income households known as the Obamacare individual mandate, this legislation will grow our economy, raise wages, and promote economic competitiveness," White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said.

"President Donald Trump applauds the House and Senate conferees on coming to an agreement on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and looks forward to fulfilling the promise he made to the American people to give them a tax cut by the end of the year," she said.

The White House statement came after the House and the Senate agreed on the unified tax bill. Senators Marco Rubio and Bob Corker also voiced their support for the bill.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy hoped to deliver the bill to the President's desk just in time for Christmas.

"We have been working toward this for years, and now the American people are closer to a plan that will deliver higher wages, lower taxes, a simpler system, and a stronger American economy," he said.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said the bill overhauls America's tax code to deliver tax relief for workers, families and job creators, and revitalise the nation's economy.

The act will lower taxes across the board, eliminate costly special-interest tax breaks, and modernise international tax system 'The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will help create more jobs, increase paychecks, and make the tax code simpler and fairer for Americans of all walks of life', said Ryan.

With this bill, the typical family of four earning the median family income of $73,000 will receive a tax cut of $2,059.

The Bill also expands the Child Tax Credit from $1,000 to $2,000 for single filers and married couples to help parents with the cost of raising children.

The tax credit is fully refundable up to $1,400 and begins to phase-out for families making over $400,000.

Ryan said the reduction in the corporate tax rate will help American businesses bring home foreign earnings to invest in growing jobs and paychecks in local communities.

"This is the first major tax reform in a generation. It means relief for hardworking families and a jumpstart for our economy," Ryan said.

The opposition Democrats, however, slammed the Bill alleging that it benefited only the rich.

"Slashing the top tax rate for the wealthiest Americans even deeper is Republicans' final insult to hard-working Americans in this deficit-exploding scam of a bill," said Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi.

"Republicans went into conference with two bills that raise taxes on tens of millions of middle class families. But instead of actually helping middle class Americans, the GOP throws them a few meagre crumbs while slashing taxes for millionaires even deeper," she said.  -- PTI
