The Supreme Court has directed the Karnataka government to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily till September 27, the date of the next hearing, to Tamil Nadu.

Following the order, Fali Nariman appearing for the Karnataka government said, "We will have to sacrifice our drinking water for irrigation purposes in Tamil Nadu."

On September 5, a SC bench involving judges Dipak Misra and Uday Umesh Lalit asked Karnataka to discharge 15,000 cusecs (cubic feet every second) of water every day to Tamil Nadu for 10 days. The order had led to violence in Bengaluru with pro-Kannada groups burning trucks and buses.
