Kashmir to witness protests on Eid
September 11, 2016  09:42
Kashmir separatists have for the first time in two-and-a-half decades called for protests during the three-day Eid festival beginning Tuesday, prompting the Mehbooba Mufti government to brace for a showdown.

The government has started working on contingency plans to impose "curfew-like" restrictions in parts of the Valley and disallow big gatherings following fears of a flare-up on Tuesday, official sources said.

Such measures were not taken even during the three waves of the summer agitation from 2008 to 2010 in the Valley. If the separatists indeed enforce the shutdown, this will be the first time since the inception of armed insurgency in 1989 that there will be a hartal on Eid.
