India's NSG bid: Laugh or cry?

The pantomime of Indias 'defining partnership' with the United States at times has a comical overtone despite the dead seriousness with which the Delhi folks work on it diligently as a budding quasi-alliance.

At issue here is the high-octane drive by India to secure membership of the Nuclear Suppliers' Group.

Not many people would know that this was originally an American idea, which our chaps found rather interesting, and which the present government began tightly embracing, co-opting it as a 'core issue'.

India has convinced itself that the NSG membership is absolutely vital for the country's electricity production. Yes, India's best argument is that the NSG membership opens new avenue for nuclear energy, which is clean, cheap and plentiful.

We may have to wait for another half century when the Ministry of External Affairs decides to declassify the archival papers to know why India decided to make the NSG membership a 'core issue' on which it was gearing up to stake its relations with China.
