As many as 200 inmates from Yerwada Central Prison in Pune have threatened to go on hunger strike against the latest amendments in the Prison Rules which deny regular parole and furlough to convicts in the cases of rape and murder, smuggling of narcotics, dacoity and terror acts.

The inmates have given a representation to the jail superintendent which will be forwarded to the state government, jail officials said.

In a notification issued on August 26, the state government had made an amendment to the Prison Rules, 1894, denying parole and furlough to convicts in a list of crimes and also to those inmates whose appeals against convictions are pending in higher courts. The decision was taken in the wake of a convict in a serious murder case in Mumbai jumping parole.

When contacted, Yerwada Jail Superintendent UT Pawar said, "The inmates have submitted a representation to us expressing their opposition to the changes in the rules for parole. They have said if this decision is not rolled back, they will go on a hunger strike."

The amendments brought in by the government are not just about eligibility for parole and furlough but also about procedures in which these jail leaves are granted. For the last four years, state government has been meticulously registering offences against inmates who jump parole or furlough, after a large number cases came to light.
