A bandh has been called in Mandya district of southern Karnataka by farmer and pro-Kannada groups today to protest against the direction by the Supreme Court asking the state to release Cauvery river water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Processions are planned too and the busy Bengaluru-Mysuru highway is likely to be blocked intermittently through the day.

Schools and colleges in the district have been closed for the day and state transport buses have been stopped on the highway.

Around 700 KSRTC government buses have been taken off the roads today by authorities as a safety measure.

Protesters have been demonstrating on the highway but so far the agitation has been peaceful.

On Monday, the apex court had directed Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu for the next 10 days to ameliorate plight of the farmers there.
