When Pranab Mukherjee smiled in China

Once. Chinese media covering the four-day visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to China said there was just one occasion when he smiled. The incident happened at the forecourt of the Great Hall of People, which is used for legislative and ceremonial activities by the PRC and the Communist Party of China.

At the end of the guard of honour for President Mukherjee around 50 children between 5 and 8 years of age waited to greet Presidents Mukherjee and Chinese president Xi Jingping.

Pranab Mukherjee beamed when he saw them and may have even wanted to linger and talk to the children but being a stickler for protocol walked by.

Senior diplomats from both China and India remarked that the normally serious demeanor of the president changed when he was near the children and he seemed younger.
