Just in: The Supreme Court asks tobacco companies to immediately implement larger pictorial warnings on tobacco products. The SC lifts the stay on the Centre's order for 85% warning granted by Dharwar bench of Karnataka High Court. The SC transfers all cases challenging tobacco product warning rule to Karnataka High Court and directs the Karnataka HC to decide the case in 8 weeks.

India's tobacco industry has sought to delay strict new health warning rules by appealing to the country's highest court, a move anti-smoking activists say could backfire given that the court has ruled against cigarette makers in the past.

Last month Indian tobacco companies went on strike by closing factories in protest against demands that 85% of a cigarette packet's surface be covered by health warnings, up from the older requirement of 20%.
