The attorney general has informed the Supreme Court that liquor baron Vijay Mallya left India on March 2.

The SC was hearing a plea filed by public sector banks seeking a direction that Mallya be restrained from leaving India.

The apex court issued notice to Mallya on the petition seeking disclosure of his assets and seizure of his passport. The SC allowed notice be served to Mallya through his official Rajya Sabha email id through the Indian High Commission at London and his counsel & Co.

Mallya has been given two weeks to respond. The next hearing is on March 30.

The consortium of banks, in their appeal, assailed the March 4 order of the Karnataka high court refusing an ex-parte, ad interim order against Mallya, England-based Diageo Plc and United Spirits Limited. The banks said that the high court should have passed an interim order, securing their financial interests.

Prior to moving the high court, the banks had filed four pleas in the Debt Recovery Tribunal at Bengaluru seeking reliefs like freezing of Mallya's passport and arrest warrant against him.

Before the Supreme Court today, the consortium of banks sought directions for the appearance of Mallya in person before the apex court and for freezing his passport.

The attorney-general told the court that Mallya's assets abroad are far in excess to the loans taken by him.

The SC also questions why loans were given to Mallya when he was a defaulter and was facing proceedings in court of law.
