Bihar topper muddle crosses border; Nepal arrests 36 'fake' doctors

M I Khan reports: Nepalese police have arrested 36 doctors, including six women, working in reputed hospitals as part of a major crackdown on medical professionals in the country who have obtained medical degrees and licences by using fake academic credentials.

"Most of those doctors arrested by Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police were working in different hospitals for years as well as running their private clinics after obtaining MBBS degrees from medical colleges in Nepal and China on the basis forged Class 12 certificates from Bihar," officials said.

An official, Keshav Raj Ghimire said that after the Bihar Class 12 merit muddle cum toppers scam hit headlines, the Nepal government ordered an inquiry into Class 10 and Class 12 certificates issued from Bihar to people of border town in Nepal.

"In the inquiry, it was found that many people have obtained fake certificates of Class 10 and 12 from Bihar and had also used them for higher education, including MBBS."

The CIB yesterday presented the doctors, who used fake academic credentials at the Kathmandu District Court seeking judicial remand for further investigation, police said. The court remanded them to custody for five days for further investigation.
