A disgruntled PhD student who had been working on his thesis for at least 10 years is believed to have killed his professor at UCLA on Wednesday after the instructor refused to give him a passing grade.

Mainak Sarkar, 38, who lived in Minneapolis but is thought to have been born in India, shot engineering professor William Klug, 39, dead in his office before turning the gun on himself, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed.

Before enrolling at UCLA, Sarkar earned a master's degree at Stanford University following an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, according to his LinkedIn page.

On Wednesday, Sarkar took his own life after killing William Klug, 39, in a small office in UCLA Engineering Building 4, sources confirmed.
