Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the constitution of a seven-member Expert Committee for exploring possible alternatives to pellet guns as 'non-lethal' weapons.

The Expert Committee will be under the chairmanship of T V S N Prasad, joint aecretary, Ministry of Home Affairs and will submit its report within two months.

The pellet guns were used to quell protests in Kashmir and were criticised of late for causing grievous injuries, mostly severe eye injuries, to young protestors and children. There were also cases of people, including children, who were not protesting but hit by pellet guns and lost eyesight.

The Director General of Central Reserved Police Force had yesterday regretted the injuries caused by pellet guns, but said that it was the 'least-lethal' mob-control option available to security forces.
