"For desi travellers on a budget, consuming London is a challenge. It's so large, there's so much information and if there's more than one of you, reconciling different notions of what's worth seeing is a tense, snappy business. So we did the sensible thing; we gave up.

"We were living in a small flat in Tufnell Park and we had a week in which to do London. We bought ourselves an Oyster card which gave us unlimited travel on buses and the Underground in Zone 1 and 2. The kind West Indian station-master who helped us decipher the mysteries of the Oyster Card machine was certain we would never stray into Zone 3. I wasn't so sure. What if we did? One of the tasks of travel is to worry."
