Tremor near North Korea nuclear site; Pyongyang reaction raises eyebrows

An earthquake in North Korea early Wednesday raised questions about whether the Communist nation conducted its fourth nuclear test.

A Yonhap news alert that Pyongyang was set to make a special announcement has created a flutter.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center measured the magnitude as 5.1 and described the seismic activity as unusual. 

The US Geological Survey said it was centered about 12 miles from Sungjibaegam at a depth of 6.2 miles.

The location is about 30 miles from the Punggye-ri site, where the North has conducted nuclear tests in the past, according to Reuters.

Reuters also reported South Korea's Meteorological Agency said the earthquake appeared to be man made. China's Earthquake Network Centre said on its website the quake was at ground level, describing it as a "suspected explosion," AFP reported.
