Donald Trump, the New York tycoon running for the Republican presidential nomination, and Bernie Sanders, the rival to Hillary Clinton in the Democratic contest, won decisive victories in the New Hampshire primary as polls closed across the state.

Trump secured 34 per cent, followed by Ohio governor John Kasich who had 15.5 per cent. In the Democratic race, Sanders had a commanding 58-40 lead over Clinton with 25 per cent of the ballots counted.

Trump will welcome the victory after his humbling loss in Iowa where Ted Cruz, the Texas senator, proved the polls wrong by securing a 27-24 per cent win over the property mogul.
