Government mulls law for harsher punishment in cheque bounce cases

In view of demonetisationand the move towards cashless transactions , the Centre is mulling changes in law to make for harsher punishment for 'cheque bounce' cases, sources said.

The suggestion came when the finance ministry mandarins met delegations of traders' associations as part of the pre-budget exercise. The associations had urged the government to consider this as part of its steps to normalize business post demonetisation.

Traders are wary of accepting cheques from customers for fear for them bouncing. They want deterrent punishment for those issuing such cheques. Traditionally considered as BJP's vote bank, traders have been severely hit by the currency ban announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
