Just In: Supreme Court stays CBI probe in Bulandshahr rape case.

The CBI had earlier this month taken over investigation in the case in which a woman and her minor daughter were assaulted by a gang in July.

The incident had taken place when six members of a Noida-based family were travelling to Shahjahanpur in western UP.

At the national highway passing through Bulandshahr, their car was stopped by criminals who dragged the 13-year-old girl and her mother out and raped them in a field nearby.

The Allahabad High Court had ordered CBI to take over investigation in the case.

The police had said earlier that the seven accused allegedly planned the crime days in advance, even conducting a reconnaissance of the incident site. The group used Kithore in Meerut district as their base and the accused sought help from a local, identified as Rayeesuddin.

The Uttar Pradesh police received flak from multiple quarters over the investigation of the incident.
