Imam among two shot dead near New York mosque

An unidentified gunman shot two men dead -- including an imam -- near a mosque in the Ozone Park neighbourhood of Queens, New York on Sunday.

Eyewitnesses said the attacker approached the imam and another 64-year-old man from behind and shot them in the head. Both of the victims were taken to a nearby hospital where Imam Maulana Akonjee, 55, was declared brought dead and the unidentified 64-year-old man later succumbed.

New York police has said that the motives of the attack is unclear and, so far, there is nothing in the preliminary investigation which indicates that the two men were targeted because of their faith.
