Irom Sharmila must spend tonight tossing in her hospital bed torn between whether she is about to make history or merely end it in a whimper. Hers has been a never-before hunger vigil, chained 16 years to a surgical tube that has kept her alive on anodyne essentials - oral hydrating fluids, baby food supplements, the occasional variation of artificial fruit juice, diluted and poured off tetra packs.
