United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today condemned the "appalling" terror attack at a civil hospital in Pakistan's Balochistan province and asked the Pakistani government to ensure safety of its population.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban said the targeting of mourners at the Civil Hospital in Quetta makes the attack "particularly appalling".

Condemning the terrorist bombing, Ban "urges the government to do its utmost to ensure safety of the population and bring to justice the perpetrators of today's attack".

He also expressed his solidarity with the people and government of Pakistan.

Over 70 people, mostly lawyers, were killed today and over 100 others injured when a powerful bomb ripped through the government-run hospital in Quetta in the restive southwestern Balochistan province.
